Hello, first post here, played BG1 2 and TOB when they came out and an embarrassing amount of hours pretty much every year since. Played BG3 in Early Access about 200 hours but not for about a year. Feels very different from originals but I'm still invested. Anyway, the race changes in full game have me questioning my build choices, mostly regarding how important darkvision is.

I wanted to try an assassin / shadow monk stealthy murder thing, went githyanki because it seems busted with the astral knowledge, and I'm too obsessive not to try to optimize my character for a game I'll likely play 1k+ hours, and given you can't respec race I want to get it right. So gith seems awesome except has no darkvision so now after a few hours IDK. So now I'm thinking about a gloomstalker / assassin since apparently I get superior darkvision at L3, though of course it's a different kind of build.

Hmm...yeah I guess my question is what race(s) should I choose for one of these stealthy type builds while keeping a decent amount of out of combat utility (main reason I picked gith)? How important is darkvision / superior darkvision? Are there any good guides yet on optimal race choices for various classes? I did find a video on youtube but it wasn't very helpful. The deep gnomes (snirfneblin?) seem kind of awesome for combat, minus the low movement speed. Also drow I guess. Mostly I'm just speculating on how much I need darkvision though. Do duergar get invisibility on level up?

I don't know DND5e rules very well but the race/class combos seem really weird to me, like a gith bard, which is probably not a thing, seems like the nuts at utility / support.

/ramble, thanks
