My save game now is essentially corrupted after I had a few friends jump in to my solo playthrough. I cannot remove them from my party at all, so I can now never bring NPC's with me on my adventures.

This seems like an oversight, and the only major issue I've had with the game so far. I've already got a muliplayer game with other friends and don't want to have to start a new game.

Everything else has been amazing so far!

This has been in the game since EA and yeah its really screws you over. Also puts a limits on game play also, personally closed my solo game to private so no one could join, kind of sad.

I've been *begging* for this since early access. Did not get much attention, now it's a massive problem

Strongly agree with adding capability to sideline a custom character in camp.

For me, it's a time respect thing.

I'd like to cram as many classes, as much customization, and all the NPC origin quests into a single looong playthrough. Realizing after 30-40hrs in with 4 custom characters that I can't do NPC origin quests as intended wiithout having to do a second playthrough is a bit of a punch in the gut.

The game is GREAT and I may want to do another playthrough anyways, but somewhat forcing players into this is a negative vibe.

Cheers!
PH

Honestly, just had to experience this. I didn't realise my game was set to public so had a random person come in and join. I couldn't figure out how to kick them, so I quickly saved and left. When I loaded the game again, I saw that the character the person made was still there.

Luckily I had an earlier save, but this is incredibly frustrating. I also felt like maybe there should be an indicator that your game is public other than settings, because I had no clue the setting was on until it happened.

SOLUTION: The party leader should have COMPLETE CONTROL who they allow into their group. NPCs should count so if party max size is 4, then 2 RL humans and 2 NPCs can join... or 3 and 1 or 1 and 3... in other words complete control should go to the party leader.

I definitely made some assumptions about how CO-OP works, and I'll admit I have a modicum of experience with CRPGs. I would love for someone at Larian to see this and they make an adjustment to how co-op/multiplayer is handled. If I start a solo game and play, everything is cool. I'm rocking along. I still have the setting on that says "Friends Only." Friend 1 joins into my game. I think (naively) that I could just assign an Origin character to them for that session but I cannot. Friend 1 must make a custom character, or another "Tav." Okay, no problem. They make a custom character and maybe I can give them an Origin character to control later.

I can give them control of another Origin character once they've joined and we can split up who controls what. Great!

We're done for the evening and about to log off, but we can't remove Friend 1's clown-ass-looking-hastily-made-so-we-can-just-spend-a-little-time-together-playing-a-fun-game-bard named Bardtholomew from the party. We can't leave them at camp. Bardtholomew is now permanently part of that branch of the save file. To continue with my group of Tav + 3 Origin Characters I have to reload a previous save file and rerun what Tav and Bardtholomew did. If Friend 1 and I want to play again, I can't just let them pick back up in my save without running into the same problem.

This is a glaring omission for what seems to be a CO-OP encouraging game.

I would like to see a few things:

1. When my friend joins, give me, as host, the option to let them create a character or take an Origin character currently in my party.
2. If my character does create a Tav, please let me leave them at camp like the other Origin characters when they log off.
2a. Worried about where they'll be when not in the party and waiting at camp? Make an outhouse that acts as a stable. You click on the outhouse and the options for which characters are available as Tav's come out when selected and become part of the party. When they're dismissed, they go back in the loo.

While I don't necessarily outright think the customs should be stuck in the party as they are, I will say this:

Multiplayer goes of the game are supposed to be just that. Multiplayer saves. Co op runs. Entire runs, not single sessions on a save otherwise played without them.
You shouldn't be joining peoples in progress saves, nor having them join yours, unless the intent is to convert it to a co op save you no longer play alone, with the story of that character joining the group late.

You're intended to have a seperate co op save that is specifically for the group of players. Only played when the entire group of players is present.
THAT is why Larian didn't bother to give custom characters a place to be in camp. Why they didn't bother to make them removable from the party.
For the exact same reason the host player's character is a permanent party member. They aren't a companion character, they're a pc. Whether that player is connected or not.
By having that 2nd player, you aren't inviting a friend to join you in your story. The 2/3/4 of you are creating "our" story and it's no longer meant to be experienced without them.
As soon as one of you logs out of the run, all of you should. Possibly to go play your solo runs.

I saw someone on Twitter claim that those PCs can be removed from the party. According to my memory of a tweet I can no longer find, you need to kill them, then ask Withers to "store their soul". Does that help at all?

Thanks for the suggestion but this doesn’t work. You can only revive them. It looks like my only option is to restart and waste 35 hours of gameplay or wait for a patch. Stuck with a full custom team with only 2 of us still playing. Really want the standard npcs to fill the 2 slots.
Blows my mind that you can’t do this yet you can in dos2. There should at least be a warning because if we’d known up front we probably wouldn’t have started it with a full team of 4.

My problem with it is that if a person in our four person group decides that they do not like their character and their race is a part of it, they either have to stop playing which leaves the group weaker or everybody has to start over.

This is mostly not going to happen as race is usually the first or second thing you decide like I wanted a Forest Gnome druid.
