He was only ever in my camp, I was never actually able to get him to join my party. And he just left at what I am assuming is end of act 2.

Did I do something wrong with keeping him happy or is that just how to goes?

He has a quest to do in the shadowed lands - I'm guessing you either missed it or failed it. He joins the party during its last stage.
