So I bought the game on Saturday. I had some reservations about BG3, the biggest being the hireling system and it was enough of a reason for me to initially not buy the game, but I decided after watching a few early playthrough’s I would spend my hard earned money on this game and give it a shot.
I am glad I did. I have only played 20hours so far and I think the game is amazing. I am also sold on the origin characters, I normally don’t care for games with Origin characters I just want to create my own custom party. However, I must admit these origin characters are really well written and I love the interactions between the different origin characters and the player character. It is brilliant.
Having said that and although I definitely will be recommending this game to friends, couple of whom are still sitting on the fence about it, but and there is a but, I am still super disappointed with the hireling system and even more now that I have experienced it for myself and can see how it works.
Come on Larian, give us fully customizable hirelings!! Surely it is possible? If not, I would love to hear the creative or technical decisions as to why custom party members aren’t happening in this game. It is a game about creating a party. It is a no brainer that there will be people wanting this option, why not just give it to them. Let the player have agency over their parties. Also, custom parties help with the longevity of game. Yes, I will complete this game and might play it one more time after that, but probably won’t pick it up again because at some point I want my own party.
Larian, what is your beef with custom party members!!?? I just don’t get it.
