And he is so cool!

I was thinking about this combo in a cleric 2/ sorc 10 build for my next run through when I realized I could play around with it and my companions. The respec even lets you re-assign ability points so I could make Gale charisma based instead of intelligence (which feels more right to tell you the truth).

I also didn't have any heavy armor users in my party, and being able to deck Gale out in all that stuff seemed like fun. Hes now running around in full plate, flying about during combat, dropping the occasional healing word if necessary, and nuking the living daylights out of the bad guys with lightning bolt upcast and all damaged maximized. Because hes in heavy armor I didn't need to bump Dex for armor class and was able to focus heavily on charisma and constitution. At sorc 4 picked up the Actor feat to get Cha to 18 and pick up a few more charisma based skills.

I think of him as my full metal mage.

Curious, you mention flying, I tried flying, i must be doing something wrong. I cant get anyone off the ground. So I just gave up trying.

I like your idea, I wanted to create a similar build,

Flying is a long jump in this game. You cannot end your turn midair.

I was referring to tempestuous magic. It took me a bit to realize you need your bonus action still available to use it, but zapping people and flying away without opportunity attacks is fun, even if its just to reposition to higher ground or something for the next round.

When reassigning ability points, all my companions +2 and +1 are stuck and can't be changed, so I pretty much can't change them to completely different classes that need other attributes.

I was able to get Gale's Charisma to start at 17, not sure if I did anything special.

Had the same problem. What fixed it for me was first unclicking the box for their current stat, so it resets, before trying to pick a new one. Maybe that'll work for you as well?

So if you use a controller, the +2 / +1 are stuck on MC and companions but not on hirelings.

Also I found a different way to build the OP's idea from comments on youtube - 2 Wiz / 2 Cleric / 8 Sorcerer.

What you do though is go INT based instead and memorize the spells you want to use for offense, you use the sorcerer slots for buffs. With this you also get sculpt spells.

I tried it out on the Wizard hireling and it would have been strong except I didn't have any lightning bolt scrolls to memorize oops.

Honestly I understand why they allow respeccing. And I still thinknl its completly counter to the dnd experience.

That said, your game. If you want tempest, go Tempest.

But come on man! Not even arcane cleric? T.T poor Mystra is turning in her weave.
