I'm about to finish Act 1, but before I wrap it up I'd like to know if it's possible to go back to the first map if needed.

It is possible to go back to the first map. This may not always be the case, though. There is at least one Act 2 location I suspect will not be accessible any longer once the main quest of Act 2 is completed.
