I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering whether there will be a point in the future where we can use Baldur's Gate 3's awesome implementation of D&D 5e to run our own campaigns, the same way that "Game Master Mode" allowed us to do in Divinity Original Sin 2.

However, I'm kinda afraid that the terms of the license might not allow Larian Studios to add such a mode to the game.  After all, WotC want players to use their online tools to play D&D over the internet, and they may have restricted the license under which Larian Studios could use the D&D trademarks and IPs in such a way as to make a competing "DM mode" impossible.

So, if anyone from Larian could clarify whether a "DM mode" is even legally possible, and if the answer is "yes", whether that's a thing they might be considering for the future of Baldur's Gate 3?  Thanks in advance!

It's not likely. Almost a confirmed no.

“No, I don’t think [so], because that would be a huge undertaking on its own,” Vincke said of a Larian-built DM tool to let players make their own campaigns. “I wish we had it because it would make our jobs easier, but it would be very complicated.”

I'd happily drop some money(at least what i paid for the game) on a kickstarter for this if LArian were up front about the cost to do this.
Difficult yes/maybe. Impossible, no.

Please for the Love of Everything Nerdy do a Game master mode like you had in the Divinity games. I know many people who love DnD and would love for a game master mode on BG3 this is a great way to keep players playing even after beating the game. It was such a great feature in the Divinity games. Please bring this to BG3...

From what I've heard in the past (about a month ago), the WotC license is what's preventing DM mode for BG3

I seem to recall hearing that it was the technical complexity of the undertaking, though can't remember where I got that from.

This is really sad to hear. This game looks like it was made to have a Dungeon master mode. Based on how fleshed out the system is.

My god, it would be great to see a mod editor as versatile as the Aurora Engine from Neverwinter Nights 20 years ago. I remember how many months of time devoted to creating my own world. Thanks to this, the game lived on for many years after its release. I would pay for such tools, even if they were more expensive than the game itself.

I wouldn't really care about a "DM mode" but I surely hope they'll be able to at least throw a bone to modders with some better tools that will allow the creation of more actual content (not just "model swaps" but new maps etc.).

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

We can only hope that 'the right people' will change mind after game success. But looks like 'nope'.

People are creative as hell, imagine all of these sessions we could have and great time with strangers.

After seeing the quality of the game and the integrity of the developers and studio, I would 100% pay for a DM/GM DLC even if it was the same price as the game.

I wonder if, because Larian said they would support Modding, this could be led as a community open source effort.

I think there may be more to why we're not getting this mode... and I don't believe for a second that there is a technical hurdle that can't be overcome fairly easily. This is, after all, a Divinity engine game.

I bet it has something to do with the licensing and content gate-keeping. If WotC was going to license world/campaign building, it would probably be a separate license and require more adherence to the game system. And, frankly, with D&D One coming out there would be no good reason for them to license an application based on the old system. As for Larian, they have more incentive to gate-keep content creation for DLC and the inevitable BG 4+. There just isn't much of a profit motive for either to want a capable DM mode out there.

This but even more. Hasbro/WotC are putting a huge amount of effort into creating a comprehensive online VTT/storefront full of microtransactions to fix their stated issue of D&D "currently being under monetized." A DM mode in BG3 would be a direct competitor to that, and so at very least WotC isn't going to give Larian permission to create one.

Our best hope is Swen's indication that BG3 will fully support modding. Ideally Larian will release better tools for that and the community will take up the creation of quest/adventure/etc modpacks.

Ha. D&D "undermonetized," as if the game should be actively monetized while people play it, as if selling hundreds of dollars' worth of expensive books and their convenient digital versions that cost nothing to manufacture for $30 a pop, isn't enough money-making.

I love investor culture. It adds so much to the world we live in.
