Please someone tell me how to use the moonlanterns?

I ran through killing all but Ketheric at Moonrise tower only to realize I had no way to get to the House of Healing due to shadow curse, so I backstepped to before tower and infiltrated only to find that the moonlantern there didn't work either... I can't get through the cursed areas!

Yes I have used to cast light spells, yes I've used personal light spells as well, none help all I do is die from necromancy from the curse, it took me 4 protection from necromancy potions a dozen heal potions and all my healing spells to slow walk all the way to the tower, thankfully seeing that waypoint in the distance saved me from a crushing depression...

Anyways, please explain to me how these moon lanterns work because I've tried everything!

Yes I have them both equiped! sigh...

I've walked every inch of moonrise tower twice someplaces three times from the stinky pits to Ketheric himself, even freed the tieflings!

Balthazar's study in the tower has a secret room with some broken lanterns and a dead pixie you can use to fix one.

I have both working moon lanterns, one of them keeps screaming obscenities at me all the time, some fairly graphic sexually in detail what the little pixie will do to me when she gets out.

I have two broken ones as well...

Balthazar has a secret room? I've searched every inch around his rooms and adjacent rooms I haven't seen any secret doors... I have the active lantern from his study... never saw the dead pixie so I will search.

Oh, you have non-broken moon lanterns? Didn’t realize that. I thought it was just supposed to work automatically, but I released the pixie inside on my playthrough. As a reward she gives you a buff that allows you to walk around shadow cursed areas without any issue.

OMG! I'm so stupid... sigh...

You know how hard getting to moonrise tower was without protection!

She is absolutely hilarious. It took me a while to figure out who was randomly swearing at me, then I heard her voice and realized it was the pixie in my inventory.

I . I would've liked to see more of her.

Ok you got me, just equip the damn thing as a weapon... sigh...
