I just encountered the entry checkpoint at Wyrm's Crossing. We decided we did not want to submit to the inspection and circumvented it. This raises two questions:

(1) I get the impression we were not supposed to circumvent it, so what do I miss, if anything, by doing it? My rationale was: we found out who controls the Steel Watch at some point, and that person probably doesn't want us in the city, so it's better if he doesn't know.

(2) I am curious about how everyone deals with this encounter I can see basically five solutions:

(1) Circumvent it by using Dimension Door (which I did) or something similar. You need two instances of the spell to get your party across.
(2) Use invisibility and walk through (no idea if that works. If I was the Steel Watch I'd equip myself with Detect Invisibility if possible).
(3) Submit to the inspection (no idea what happens then)
(4) Disguise yourself and give a wrong name (no idea if that works, the wrong name you get as an option if not disguised sounds too obviously silly to work).
(5) Attack the checkpoint (Probably not a good idea, even if you could win - I did not examine the potential enemies).

The reason why I get the impression we were not supposed to circumvent it is that there is a large rock placed in the obvious path of a movement spell that blocks sight of the target area. I found a place from where it works, but it is small.
So...anything else I might want to know about this?

I literally just took a covert little path down to the right to get past the checkpoint.

Which path? There's one down that leads under the bridge, but I couldn't find a way up from there.
