1's are onyl crtical failuress in 5e only on attacks.

1's arent failures if u have the stats to back it up on any other roll.

20s are not automatic successes either, but they gave us that too. they decided in a lot of cases to use "table rules" like potion bonus actions. Seems to be a decision that a lot of tables follow. There is an unspoken rule at most tables: if it is impossible, do not allow a roll and if you let them roll, it should be possible, (and if only with a crit), i think it is an excusable decision

Yes, this is a homebrew rule rather than a bug, and one that there's been a lot of chat about over early access. I even think we had another thread about it in the past couple of weeks, too.

Some folk don't like this change from RAW, some folk (me included) do, but it's pretty clear given how much it's been talked about that it's intended.

I prefer this 'homebrew' from earlier editions. As a dm, if you ask the player to roll, there should always be a chance to fail or succeed. But, they could add an option to go standard for those who prefer that

95% spell chance on my sorc, cool. Still fails, waaaah. And yes I guarantee I'm still failing way more than just 5% of the time.

The only 2 times I'd ever really consider save scumming justified, is crit failing (or succeeding) a check where the math would have put your total above (below) the dc, letting you succeed (fail) if crits weren't a thing.

D&D only applies crits to attack rolls and saving throws for reason.
Applying them to anything else is bad design.

I've had a couple of critical success on story related skill checks I'm thrilled that I got. Real cheering took place. So if the payoff is failure on 1, then I accept it.

I like the idea of being able to bail out on a 20 when I didn't build my character for a DC 25+ skill check, but I hated when I rolled a 1 on the DC 0 free Shadowheart Wisdom check on Nautiloid.

It did seem counterintuitive. I think it's been made DC2 in the full release.

wait. does a crit 20 always succeed even while stealing gold? Could i steal 22k gold from a trader if i savescum enough? i would not want to do that, but the temptation alone is somewhat annoying.

*edit*

asterion +bardic inspiration +guidance can steal anything with high chance and, if you want, save scumming anyways sooo not that big a point i guess.
