Hello!

My husband and I want to play in a party together with four custom characters. We want each of us to be able to control two of the characters. We've started a multiplayer game and each got to roll up one character. We played through the first part and have exited the ship. Can we add two more customer characters to our party now? If so, how? And if we add two new characters now, will they start at level 1?

I'm aware they can't later be removed from the party, that's fine.

Apologies if this method is obvious, I've been banging my head against it for a while.

Thanks for your help!

Bear in mind you can respec companion characters at withers, to make them mechanically whatever you want them to be.
There's no need to lose out on the story of companion characters just to have the party comp you want.

Then there's the hirelings, which are meant to be there so that you can still have your party of 4 if you don't have enough companion characters left, but you can always bring them in to get the team comp you want without the companion story, if really desired.

And of course you can always get 2 friends of yours to connect to your save just to make a custom character according to your design intentions, then leave so you can just have that custom there.
Or random internet people like me, if you've no friends with the game.

We can't respec NPC's race or appearance though. Wanting to play four fully-custom characters is absolutely a good enough reason to "miss out" on the NPC stuff. My husband and I will each run solo games to partake of NPC content; we have a very specific vision for our co-op game.

So it appears the only way to set this up how we want it is to get two additional people to join the campaign and make custom characters, and then have them leave? That's unfortunate.

Do the new characters start out at level 1, or do they scale to the rest of the party?

I am not sure if they have changed things since the time, I read what I read. But... I think you can run multiple instances of the game on one machine and create custom characters then merge the party and restart in one instance. I think you need a hog of a machine to do it cause its running so much at once. I read an early post on it I think here, but I have seen guides on how to do it other places.

Unfortunately that no longer works. I can open the launcher a second time, but clicking the Play button when the game is already open does nothing.

I considered creating third and fourth Steam accounts for my husband and I on old machines so we could buy the game long enough to make our four custom characters, and then return it on the two old computers. But what a pain in the butt! So we ended up recruiting two people who also play to roll up our second characters to our specifications, and then log out. So we're all set now.

Now to see how things go with Withers' wardrobe...

You can still get multiple tavs going its just different. I found a guide on steam that explained it, I'm not at the computer so I can't link.

Close down steam open the exe file location and shift left double click it, it'll skip launcher and run under Volcan. The guide said the basic exe but I don't know if 11 version will work also.

The game will run offline and go by lan or whatever, it'll be under multi-player when you go to create a character & host.

You might be able to ad tavs to a later game by the same method, untested though for me.

Have fun
