just put Command spell on Shadowheart and tell him to drop the weapon grab it and run, can get his loot with out killing him 55% chance so if you need to burn both spell slots , it also makes him only do 6 damge to the mindflayer so very easy way to grab the weapon with out killing him or cheeseing it with bombs or other ways

Mine was 80% chance on tactitian.

What did you do to give yourself advantage?

Because command is a save roll maybe he gave him disadvantage to save with something like hex but with an even number like 80% it probably didn't involve advantage/disadvantage.

Shadowheart has access to Bane at the start of the game, so probably Bane first then Command.

Though it's kind of wasted, much better to Bless three friendlies first and then Command.

You can try to get Lae'zel to Daze him first with a pommel strike, then use Command.
