There needs to be an adjustment to how Oath of the Ancients paladins are treated, at least in the Nere fight.
During the course of my romp thru Grymforge, I convinced Elder Brithvar to stand with me against Nere. During the course of the battle, some nearby guards became hostile and got killed during the fight. At the battle's culmination, I convinced Brithvar to free the gnomes.
As soon as the dialog finishes, I'm informed that my Oath of the Ancients Paladin has broken their oath because of the guard that got killed.
This is clearly nonsense, and no DM in their right mind would make such a call. When there's a legitimate pitched battle already in-progress, and members of an evil faction join in against a party that is actively trying to save innocents, this sort of guard reaction/consequence should never trigger in the first place.

I wonder if this is related to the issue with the Enemy of Justice condition reported at https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=879196. Or at least, a consequence of the same underlying problem with the way the game seems to be handling certain NPCs/guards. I completely agree that this shouldn't be oath-breaking. If you haven't already reported the bug to Larian (the Report a Bug link at the top of the launcher will take you to the right place), then that seems worth doing.

How does any of that even have any relation to the Oath of the Ancients oath? They desperately need to clearly lay out the guidelines for how they decided what these tenants are and mean. Because it's been pretty nonsensical. Oath of Vengeance paladins even get called oathbreakers for killing people who are trying to kill them, if they were marked as "innocents." And labeling someone who wants to murder a trapped Lae'zel for being gith as "innocent" to begin with is one hell of a stretch.

@The Red Queen That certainly sounds like the same issue. TBH, I've had a very difficult time using these forums -- the search function just never seems to return any relevant results (I'd tried searching with Grymforge & Paladin as keywords).
Anyway, thanks for the tip about the bug report function in the launcher. I was resentful of needing a 3rd party launcher, so I'd been using the --skip-launcher option in Steam since day 2.

I usually suggest the launcher as it’s easy to refind the link there, but you can also just go to the Support section of Larian’s website. The bug report form is at https://larian.com/support/baldur-s-gate-3#modal.

Ah good to know. I just submitted screenshots and a save file along with links to both threads and a description of the problem. Hopefully it will help, repeating difficult fights to work-around such bugs is trying...

I just got to this point with my Ancients paladin as well and experienced the same issue. In fact, Elder Brithvar went hostile immediately after the fight for "killing a guard" and I had to kill him, too! My character is now an "Enemy of Justice" in Grymforge and instantly attacked by any remaining duergar.
I sucked it up and paid my 1,000gp to get my powers back. The scenes with the Oathbreaker Knight in camp would be really cool if it wasn't due to a bug.
