Hey everyone,

my brother, two friends and I wanted to start a 4-player coop BG3 run (slog really, we have around 3 hours every week at the max, haha) and I was wondering what would be the best way to play, since I really liked the stellar companion writing and voice acting in my single player campaign.

So these are our options if I'm correct:

1. Custom Tavs:

So if we all play custom Tavs, we won't be able to take any companion with us and we will be locked out of companion quests completely, right? But on the other hand, we'd still get to talk to them in camp.

2. Origins

If we play as origin characters, we will have access to the origins' questslines, but we will miss all of the companion interactions in camp.

What would be the best way to experience a 4-player multiplayer campaign if I really like the origin characters and think they are the best part of the game?

I'm kind of leaning towards option 2, since that seems to be similar to how Divinity Original Sin 2 played when selecting origin characters, and I quite enjoy that. We'd still get their personal quests, too. But on the other hand, DOS2 did not have the same level of character interactions with all of your companions at camp, and I think just playing as 4 mostly silent origins could also be a bit boring. So I wonder if we'd get more out of the companions if we just played custon Tavs and then interacted with everyone in camp every once in a while.

What does everyone think is the best way to go for us?

Thanks in advance!

I think you've already answered your own question. If you feel the Origin characters are the best part of the game, play an origin character. Assume you'll have more play-throughs, so whatever Origin character you use this time can be an NPC next time. It's impossible to experience all the content the game has to offer in one play-through anyway, so trying to maximize for content exposure is folly IMO.

My husband and I are playing as 4 custom characters, no origin characters, and obviously no NPCs in the party. We did this knowing we'd miss out on some stuff, but we had very specific ideas of what we wanted to play. We're both enjoying the campaign immensely. SO glad we were able to get a couple friends to help us set up the two additional characters.

I also have my own solo campaign (also a custom character), who will partake in the NPC questlines, etc.
