Does this also work when all 4 players are online and we want to switch out a Tav to do origin companion quests?

Further detail:

I'm in a 4-player coop campaign with 4 origin characters. We've just played for 2 hours and decided to go with Origin characters, since it was not possible to do certain questlines, because we could never switch one Tav out for an origin character.

Now with the new Patch and Withers' Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, this might be possible, and we're wondering if we should start a fresh game with Tavs instead of Origins. But from reading the patch notes, I worry that one can only store Tav of OFFLINE players in the wardrobe.

I cannot test this, because currently, we all play origin characters and they cannot be stored in the wardrobe. So we'd have to start a new game to test it, but we don't want to play through the tutorial again just to find out it doesn't work.


So once again, I'd like to know:

Can we create a 4-player Tav group and then the host can store active player's Tavs in the wardrobe and assign them Origin Party NPCs to control?

To tack onto this, can we pull a custom/Tav character back out of the chest and continue to play it, or is it lost forever and needs to be recreated by having said friend log in again?

My husband and I are playing with two custom characters each. We're just now getting to the point in the story that it will be a problem if we can't bring an NPC into our group, so this is really good timing. But I am afraid what happens when I put my second character in Wither's closet.. will I be able to pull her back out? We will test today and I will report back here, but I am super paranoid that something will go terribly wrong. Like, corrupting all my past save states so I can't get my other character back without having two friends log in to occupy the bodies again. We shall see!
