So this is the first listed option under the "Interface" settings.
It was built-in for the EA as I remember this being like one of the first settings I changed early on though I eventually just let it whirl around.
However I just tried it right now and I had to relaunch/reload in order for this change to take effect. So it could be the same for you there?
The mini is somewhat improved from the first weeks of EA, where it's a bit simpler to see what's what, though elevation is still a mystery a lot of the time.
I also think the choice of a very circular lookin' planchette was not the best, as it's hard to tell which way everyone is facing there. I think a narrow triangle or a much longer/thinner planchette would have been easier to read. Also if we could have assigned colors to our planchettes so that we know who is who at a glance. For example position 1-4 might have a floating colored numeral so it's very simple for us to tell who is who from that display.
I think the circle used actually may describe the space taken up by the character, but I just don't like the circle. There is a very small design element to indicate which way the party members are facing but its quite small, like too small to be useful. This is actually the reason I ultimately stopped trying to keep the mini-facing north, because it was difficult to tell which direction I was facing at a glance from those symbols.
Far as I can tell there is no option to hide the mini-map HUD altogether, or to issue movement commands from this screen, which would have been very convenient.
ps. Oh also, related, so when you go in to all those settings, in order to scroll up/down for this menu you have to hover your cursor over the left side of the screen where all the listed options are and middle mouse wheel. If you don't you might think that the options at the top of the tab are all that's available. If you hover your cursor over the right half of the screen (not uncommon given that many users would be right handed) the scroll there won't register. This actually took me way longer to figure out than it should have. There is no up/down slider (there almost appears to be, but the design element which seems like it might be intended for that doesn't actually move.) There also doesn't seem to be an intuitive way to expand details from this screen. This holds for other places in the UI, where what I would like to do is say shift+click to get more details for whatever the thing is, without the cursor reorienting to highlight the next item down on the list.
