Out of curiosity if you choose a companion as an origin character (shadowheart, astarion, gale, etc.,) does the game give you anymore insight into their personal stories than if you have them as a companion to a custom made main character?

Or is it simply an extra line here or there? Thanks for any responses.

You do get extra content. I can't speak on the extent of it, but for Astarion there were extra cutscenes and internal narration. I assume it's the same for the other Origins as well!

You get extra content, but not that much. I played Astarion and scenes connected to him were more unique and interesting, but apart from it, he had his own lines rather rarely and it was rather cosmetical. Also, origins don't really speak - like customizable player's character - and they seem to have no personality because of it. So pros and cons.

Karlach does not have much, if any extra content. She gets even less, for her quest jumps the “middle steps” right to the end of it.
