I would like to see a 5th companion slot that functions like a temp summons (pretty much exactly the way Halsin, Minthara, Jaheira etc work when you first meet them and join their side in a fight).
When dismissed this companion says "I'll go scout ahead..." or "I'll make sure we weren't followed..."
The impression we should have is not that they are waiting for us at a camp, but that they are somewhere still in the vicinity of the party. Like still within earshot, even if we can't see them. Then when we blow the party horn, they come running (whoever we choose to call up.) They already have the cool sound effect which Zevlor uses at the gate to rally everyone. Just use that, but the portable Boromir version. All our companions and camp followers should share the same general inventory. Each follower might have a special smaller inventory called personal items, where they can store a more limited amount of stuff. If you've had it happen where say Lae'zel temporarily leaves the party and dumps a trunk of plate armor in your lap to go talk to her friends, something like that just shouldn't be allowed to happen. I think for believability the idea is that all our camp followers and our companion/pack animals are travelling along with us, at only a slight remove. Our wagon train basically. This might actually be physically in a location for each area, and as we transition around the world the wagon also hops around.
To me that would be much more immersive, and would solve the problem of a party of 4 not being able to experience the Companion stories in this game, which is a substantial part of it's appeal. This way 4 people could each have a custom PC and a controller, and the host can call up the other companion npcs for story stuff. Summoned up and dismissed when their relevant story beats occur. Essentially the narrator interjecting with the option to call "whoever" over. I think they should allow for this in combat too, since a lot of story happens immediately before/after a battle. Even though it's a buff, the general QoL there would outweigh that in my mind, and anyway they're probably comparable to a guardian or a myrmidon or whatever the PCs most powerful summon would be. A little pop up screen that allows us to select a companion from camp with their avatars on a radial or mini bar.
