Looking through the site with all the maps on, I realised that I hadn't gone to the Tree of Realization in Act 2 (SW of imp village). I promptly headed back there. Basically all I can see that I achieved was a bit of gold and slightly more practice at killing things. Are you supposed to get anything out of visiting this tree (actually three trees), or was it just a nice journey?

Did you have a cut scene? Only after you have freed the imp in the spider area (Spider Queen - Stignix) and chose his reward"interesting secret".
this tree will give you several options to chose from, I'd take the gold one.

No cut scene, but I've not been to the spiders yet (had got the impression that I needed to deal with the Alchemist first).
OK, spiders, tree, alchemist, spider running loose, shaman. Right, got it.

The alchemist should be dealt with last. Once you give him the 3 ingredients he needs, it will lead to the end of the act, and any other open quests can not be completed.

I thought that I read in a posting here that you can only get the spider running loose not to attack you, and to come back peacefully to the spider handler, after you had dealt with the alchemist portion of things. Certainly, on the (non-saved) games where I ran into the thing, it attacked me on sight - no chance to go tickling it on whichever side I felt like trying spider-tickling.

You need to visit the alchemist's house to find the odour removing cream so the spider will remain friendly, but do not need to find the alchemist himself first.

Is that the 'strange potion' that I picked up a couple of bottles of? I'd pegged them as being important to the illness quest, so wasn't touching them.
On a potion related note - how permanent are permanent potions? I picked up a permanent intelligence potion somewhere, and whilst I was in the battlefields last time, drank it. Gave me a +6 to intelligence. Nice (for my archer/mage character). When I opened up the inventory again only about 30 seconds later, however, the +6 had disappeared, and I'd lost the benefits and it's never come back. Not so nice.

Nope, strange potion (combined with the other strange potion creates Emu Eartes Sues, for the "imp needs potion" quest).
Normally permanent potions are and remain permanent. Guess, yoou stumbled over a bug.
The alchemist => as soon as you find him (not in Imp Village) he will ask for 3 ingredients, not potions <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> Kiya

Gave me a +6 to intelligence Probably was the intelligence potion in the lich cave in mushroom forest. That thing is bugged (always had it with that potion, never with any other perm potion). Normal perm potions just give you +1 of whatever attribute the potion is.
