Greetings!
This is my first ever post here on this forum and first of all I wanted to say a big thank you to Larian and everyone involved in Baldur's Gate for their hard work. I love the game and I'm so excited for everything that's still coming to it, be it a new patch, DLC, Definitive Edition, whatever.
After I finished my first playthrough though, a question popped into my head, which I hoped could be answered here, because I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to DND lore.
Sooo - what "powerlevel" has Raphael? Why can't he just take away our tadpole, instead giving us the only option of obtaining the Orphic Hammer? Is he just too weak against the Elder Brain? As a devil and obviously being able to shut up the emperor, I thought he had enough power to do that too...

If he had made the deal with Tav - curing the tadpole in exchange for the soul and/or the crown, he could even have got a better chance of obtainig the crown, because Tav wouldn't have been influenced as much.

I hope somebody can explain that to me. If it was just a design/writing choice, or if he really is that weak and can't meddle with the mindflayers and their parasites.

Non expert, but what you have to know is that in true D&D, the cure for the tadpole would have been
to simply kill the player, extract it, and resurrect them
. In game, this is handwaved because
~Netherese magic~
. Presumably, the tadpole resurrects with the player each time. In my opinion, Raphael comes off as a bumbling idiot, though probably not on purpose. There's really no reason for the player to indulge his "schemes".

In his dedication to giving you a terrible deal, he sabotaged himself through his own hybris.

Aaah, I see. Thank you!

Shame tho, that it's not a viable option. I rather liked Raphael from his voice and behavior, but yeah he definitely could have handled the deal better xD

The game makes a point of telling us he's a cambion... and their schemes are imperfect... but I too did not expect that flavour. He's the type of guy walking around, telling everyone about his 200 IQ, only to be shocked the player stole the hammer. I'm not sure the game isn't self aware. Because it proceeds to rub it in if
you find out he's a pillow princess that still somehow manages to be terrible in bed. Why let us start a fight by mocking him for it?
. The more you know. The entire premise of Bg3 is really "Raphael taking an L", considering he
caused the series of events to be put in motion just to steal the crown in the first place.
