I understand the reasoning of preventing respecs as an Oathbreaker; it would be pretty dumb if you could just respec back to whichever oath you wanted to be. Needing to pay money to the Oathbreaker paladin to regain your oath before you can respec in that context makes sense. In practice, however, I'm fairly confident that the overwhelming majority of players with an Oathbreaker Paladin, myself included, fully intend on being one. In that context, respeccing would not be an exploit to get out of the broken oath, but rather to reselect abilities, feats, etc. I see no reason why being an Oathbreaker should prevent you from switching your feats any more than any other class/subclass. If an Oathbreaker does need to respec, it requires regaining your oath, respeccing, and then intentionally going out looking for a reason to break your Oath, which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

I suggest instead making it that you can respec as an Oathbreaker Paladin, but you can't choose an oath and are instead locked in as an Oathbreaker.

I would rather see them remove Oathbreaker and instead introduce an "anti" Paladin class. Then change losing your "oath" so that once you lose it you become a fighter and your done. Then all you need do is not allow a Paladin to be used at ALL in the respec tree unless you are already one.

Oathbreaker is a real 5e Paladin subclass. No reason to reduce the amount of content.

Ha! That's the old school way it was handled. "Oh you broke your Druid/Paladin/Cleric - Bond with Nature/Oath/Your God disowned you? Congrats you are now a fighter"
