Some background. I've beat the game and I love it. I think it's now my favorite game of all time.
I'm 100% you're target audience. I'm a avid table top role player, I've played 5th ed D&D the last 5 years. I know most of the classes inside-and-out and I'm really enjoying the subtle differences between BG3 and D&D (many of which I wish D&D would adopt, bonus actions on weapons for example, or various weapons having special actions). I've praised the game publicly here:
https://x.com/ChadVerrall/status/1706208759889211651?s=20I've recently picked up a second copy for my wife (PC) so we could play BG3 multiplayer. While I've advised her to play the game single player first and then move into multiplayer, she's primarily a social gamer. She much prefers to play games with people/friends. She loves narrative based games but does play table top roleplaying games and has never played D&D 5th ed (Often when I go play she's on kid duty, so as much as I think she'd enjoy doing roleplay games she's never done it). She also typically does not like turn based combat (She prefers Dragon Age's mostly real time), but she was willing to overlook that aspect because of my and others praises of how good the game is.
Right away the stumbling blocks that she's fighting the most:
1) Camera. She wants it to follow the character she's selected, while you can have that happen by hitting the "Home" button it's super easy to accidently hit 'W' or 'S' and then that functionality stops. I think this is partially because players are forced to do all the yaw positioning on the camera (Q & E and they're very close to the W/S keys). Also she really wish the camera would automatically yaw to face the direction your selected hero is facing/moving (over time), like most modern 3rd person cameras do (See Uncharted when out of combat, or Ghost of Tsushima, etc). Right now she's having to constantly yaw the camera with 'Q' and 'E' and she hates that you have to manage the camera so much.
2) It's not super obvious what spells are cantrips Vs ones that use a spell slot and with her being TOTALLY NEW to D&D I watcher her burn her spells super quickly and very early on. I wish there was some UI coloration difference between the buttons (maybe outer rim/boarder change). Better yet, I wish they were auto organized so the cantrips were not intermixed with spells. I think she could have used more tutorials for how D&D 5th ed works and for the beginning experience to be more drip fed to her so that should could totally grok it. I'll be trying to teach her and guide her through the UI a bit before we play again.

PS: Granted, I too hate D&D's spell system with spell slots and long rest requirement. I much prefer Earthdawn's you can always cast a spell that you have attuned into your spell matrix concept. The only benefit I feel it has (and you made great use of it) is the requirement to have a camp/down time, which then allows a vehicle for lots of story moments/character interactions. Alas, I digress.
