so been thinking of doing a good-aligned playthru as a Zariel tielfing however based off what we learned from Karlach, Zariel isnt exactly the nicest resident of Avernus out there so as a newbie to DnD lore do tieflings have to have the same personality as their subclass i.e Zariel tieflings have to be evil? this is prob a stupid question for DnD vets but for me it aint, lol

You can be a Zariel Tiefling and be any alignment you want. The sub-race only indicates a possible bloodline link, your Tiefling is either descended from Zariel, or descended from someone influenced directly by Zariel, but that doesn't mean it has any effect on your character's overall personality or behaviour, unless something in the story has specifically been written in that way (which I don't believe it is, in BG3).

I'm a Zariel Tiefling in my current play through and the Zariel part has not come up once (not even from those who who are familiar with her) - there are Tiefling conversation options, but they're pretty neutral by alignment standards so you're not forced into being "good" or "evil".

So go for it and play how you want.

There can be a few "advantages" (lower DC of particular skill checks) and the ability to bypass the need for a check completely dependent on class, race, and in even gender. Most of extra comments are benign. A few might get nasty return comment, but no real "disadvantage" to game play. There are few "disadvantages" in Story and Balanced play. I am aware of one interaction that does not happen in Act 1 if you are Drow, but it is meant to be a roleplay opportunity. That changes in Tactician mode though. Some things just might require some forethought, or quick thinking if you are not familiar with the general racial views within Fearun. "F8"(on PC) is quick load to last save in the event you may feel the need.
