Personally I think you could really spice up Musical Instrument proficiency or the performer feat by adding magical instruments with effects to the game. You could make it so the effects only work if you have musical instrument proficiency. You could require these effects to use an action or bonus action. You could have the effect be usable once per turn/combat/short rest/long rest. You could have some stronger effects require concentration or require you to make a performance ability check. I just find the idea of playing music in combat is so interesting. It would be really cool to have your character able to play music in combat that would inspire allies(buff), demoralize foes(debuff/crowd control), or maybe even deal some damage. I can already think about dealing damage with a sonic wave from a violin, a blow dart fired from a flute, a lightning arrow fired from a harp, or maybe just going full Jimmy Hendrix and smashing a lute over someone's head. I think this would definitely spice up the performer feat and make people really want to take it where other times it would be ignored completely. But most importantly, I think that people would find this extremely fun.
