I just started out on this game today as a mage. My mage is on level 2 right now and I don't know if it was a wise idea to start the game out as a mage. I opened up the catacombs that the elf Larian has mentioned to me and I went down and used the the teleporting pyramid and got myself killed. So, will this pyramid be in the same place the whole time I use it? Or will I get transported to different places? Also, how well prepared should a mage be before heading down into the catacombs for the first time? As I've said I got myself killed the first time using the transporting pyramid. So, where do I go from here? Should I get some more weapons? Or should I fight the Orcs instead before heading into the catacombs? Any help would be great! Thanks!

I'm by no means an expert since I just got the game the other day, but you'll just have to come up with a strategy to kill those skeletons to retrieve your pyramid, and then you can use them from safe locations. My warrior didn't have any problems but he has good life & that spinning attack that hits everyone around him. You'll probably have to run like Carl Lewis and cast spells as you can.

Alternately, you can just go in on level 1 to kill some of the easier critters that don't mob you and try to gain a level or two before you retrieve the pyramid. There are a few quests in town that can net you a couple of levels as well. I believe if you just go through the catacombs you will eventually come upon the pyramid anyways, although it's handy to get first so you don't have to truck through parts of the map you have already cleared.

Persistance should win you the day.

You can run around killing rabbits and a cow to get some experience points, and loot various houses to get better equipment. You don't need to get the teleporter stone right away; after you go up a couple levels, that encounter will be easier.
