I've searched the forum but didn't find an answer.

I gave my DK 1 pt in pickpocketing. The skill window said "Creature level 5", so I understand that the skill would now work only on NPCs level 5 and below. When I go pickpocketing, I can pick 1-2 items max, and even from NPCs level 9. When I add 1 more pt into the skill, I can get one more item, afterwards I get a message saying "You cannot pickpocket this item".

So, does the skill level define the level of the creature which can be pickpocketed, or the number of items one can steal from a single NPC? I am leaning towards the latter, though it does not make much sense.

strangely enough - that's how it is for me too

skill description says that with 4 in the skill i should only be able to pickpocket level 20 characters
instead you can pickpocket any level NPCs

when i went from level 7 to level 10 i could pickpocket 3 more times so perhaps it's a simple formula
number of times you can pickpocket any NPC = your skill level.

which is slightly inappropriate.

OK, finally find a post saying that there is in fact a limit on the number of times one can can steal from an NPC. One can steal again when levelling the skill or moving onto the next Act.
