Kinda minor complaint, but I'm currently playing as a paladin and it sure feels the game was originally designed to let paladins choose a deity and then that functionality was taken out. Like when you talk to Gale after doing the scene where you channel the weave with him he tells you "as a paladin, your patron deity endows you with many such powers otherwise unattainable". And I saw a mod on nexus say that Cleric and Paladin are the only two classes with the HasGod variable, but Paladins is set to off. Not a DnD player but I know that in 5E paladins don't get their powers from deities, but instead from their devotion to their oath or something like that. But I've also read that most paladins still choose to serve a god, and to me it kinda seems clear that the game was designed with that intention in mind.

I play on console so I can't mod, and I just want to play a goody two-shoes Paladin of Selune without having to waste a level to multiclass into cleric. Please one day add the ability for paladins to pick diety back in.

Yes please!
I usually take 1 level of Cleric for RP and just so I can see "Paladin of [Deity name]" every now and then in speech prompts, but it would be nice not to have to

There is a mod for this and it is obvious the hooks from EA allowing deity selection are still in place. I hope Larian puts it back officially.

Yep would be nice to choose deity at character creation, and being allowed to explicitly switch deity during gameplay, at least if you meet a cleric of said deity.

Maybe even have some tiny effect depending upon your deity choice, too, such as +1 on a skill.

Agree on all but switching Deity. Part of the leveling process by lore is your devotion to your deity. A beginning cleric is actual level zero not level 1. Which means by the time your a character in the game you have shown a certain level of devotion. Switching deity would thus be starting over but worse than considering multiclassing. You have shown a lack of devotion to your starting diety which means their favor is likely rmoved and thus you have no spells. Further is the new deity likely yo believe your faith as you have shown you are fickle.

Thumbs up to all you Good People who take a lvl in Cleric before switching to Paladin.
Personally I think that Paladin should be a subclass of Cleric anyway ...

I agree with OP, I too, prefer the Holy Warrior versions of Paladins over the Oath versions, Oath Paladins are as pointless as Atheist Clerics or Wheelchair bound player characters in a World where the Gods do interact with Mortals and 1st level cleric spells like Cure Wounds and Healing Word can literally fix any broken bones.

The oath version put into the game rules was to give specific types of skill sets for various game worlds. It in now way intended to remove Paladin Deity alignment if the game world uses it, which the Forgotten Realms does.

I do not share the interpretation of cleric levels being somehow levels with a belief.

Level is, for all characters, the progress of that character.

As much as I dislike Paladins I agree they feel, lacking without a deity.

Mostly devotion paladins, to be more precise. Oath of the ancients feels like it is bound to natural law, rather than divine law.
