I just started the game. I have found some skill books which I click on and a message pops up listing the skills I just learned. However, afterward I cannot find the skills that I just supposedly learned anywhere on the game interface much less be able to use them. E.g., they are not under the skills tab or inventory tab. Where are they and how do I use them? (DD interface was never this difficult or awkward)

When reading books or buying skills from teachers,
you do not acquire the skill, but the ability to learn the skill.
To be able to use the skill, you still have to invest skill points in them.

Just go to the skill interface, click on an empty square and a list of available skills will pop up. Reading books or buying skills will allow you to explore new skill paths.

The skill pane can be opened with the default hotkey 'k', or with the bottom left icon under the character portraits, IIRC.
