I'm not sure BG3 deserved to be nominated for best multiplayer game...

I've played around the same amount of time co-op than I have spent in single player. Both modes are good, it deserves a nomination at least.

I think the novelty and boldness of a multiplayer, narrative RPG is something worth acknowledging.

That wasn't what the award was for, though - it was "For outstanding online multiplayer gameplay and design, including co-op and massively multiplayer experiences"

BG3's multiplayer is a buggy broken mess, by most accounts, and it doesn't do anything new or innovative with its delivery or design that wasn't already done by its divinity predecessor.

Personally, of all the categories, the only one that I felt BG3 was worth a vote for was the one acknowledging the voice actors.

Edit: That aside, I've been playing a multi-player narratively driven RPG with voice acting and cutscenes for the past 16 years, and would not call Larian's multiplayer 'novel' or 'bold' in any real respect.

Which one? Not much of a multiplayer tbh, never been. I'm also not a HUGE cinematics fan nor do I need full VO. However, the way BG3 (or to a lesser extent DOS2) branch out from the go, as well as all the systemic interactions and open quest design... can't see that anybody has tried that before. Even in singleplayer, I've had a few sequences where I was puzzled how they managed that withouth the game glitching out or breaking (which on the occasion, I've also seen happening).

In particular since "narratively driven RPG" has become pretty much synonymous with the Bioware experience the moment they pushed that way: A pretty linear interactive movie with some branching COYA (dialogue) choices here and there, the model also adopted by CD Projekt, as they're really their former peers. Narrative-driven and multiplayer is even more tricky, as players may want to push that narrative in different directions (to the point where one player at any moment may just want to kill the guy the party's talking to). Narrative driven and cinematic and multiplayer doubly so. Narrative-driven, multi-player, cinematic AND a game branching out, even with every individual quest, well... there was this discussion early this year for reason. https://www.pcgamer.com/were-runnin...-lead-quest-designer-on-big-budget-rpgs/

As for awards, I don't care for them. What will be more interesting is:

- If a game is still being talked about in a couple years from now.
- Whether it had a positive influence on an industry (which, if you ask me, the big budget RPG space has been in dire need of for decades).

There were some big let downs for me, namely Starfield and especially Final Fantasy 16, but BG3, AC6, and Zelda more than make up for those disappointments. Crazy year in gaming.

DId I overlook something or was Neil NEwborn the only voice actor nominated? Not that he doesn't deserve it, but it is a bit sad, that the otehrs don't get the same kind of recognition, since they are all really good.
The music should get an award too, it is so well done. I normally don't listen to videogame music outside of playing the game, but I have more than a few pieces from BG3 on my playlist.

I have not played it multiplayer myself (the times at which I play are too irregular, and when I have a fixed schedule, it’s already taken up by pen&paper roleplaying), but friends of mine who did are absolutely enthusiastic.

The music is awesome. I actually started singing along before buying BG3 (I waited until I saw reports that it works on regular Linux under wine).

It does get a lot of recognition by composers on Youtube.

Sorry for my english ... I hope you understand what I try to say: crazy

I don't understand why everybody is so "into Zelda". To be honest: I never played it, but my children have played the first and the second part for weeks on the TV.

I remember how I bought them the second Zelda-part and have seen them playing on TV. And I asked: "Why are you playing the first part when I just bought you this (expensive) second part??" And they told me that they ARE playing the second part. And I was like:"WHHAAATTTTT?? Looks EXACTLY like the first part!! I see NO difference!"

My children really loved both parts and say the second part have A LOT great improvments. But I see the "same game" with improvents (and without housing!!). Ok, the improvments are great, but why does everybody treat this game like a new game. It is somehow unfair ...

.... just my personal opinion.

We were talking about awards and praise for games in another thread, mostly in the context of how broken BG3 is right now.
For example, I'm spending time on the forums because I'm in Act 3, which is currently unplayable unless I switch to a pre-patch 4 save. So... unless I replay an older Tav.

As much as I love *some* aspects of BG3, I can't imagine voting for a game that currently I can't even play. Because of how CP2077 was released by CDPR, and how it now seems like the accepted game design-to-market strategy to release buggy, unfinished code and then support it for longterm on the fly. BG3 seems to be following the same path.

I just don't think gamers will end up benefiting from this current trend of releasing a clearly unready product, then relying on hype and some adorably saucy characters to carry the day while your customers cool their heels on the forums, trying to figure out how to get around the mess.

YMMV, of course, but BG3 gets no votes from me. It's not ready for primetime. I think Larian should spend time fixing the mess rather than courting more internet hype.

Here is Swen’s tweet about the nominations:
“This is a real honor, especially in a year with so many releases. Seeing our little “niche rpg” make such waves is very motivating. I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries. I’m very excited about it.”

Can’t wait to hear what they are working on next!
