If you have more than 1 shovel in your inventory you cant dig

I had something very similar, dropping a shovel and picking it up solved it for me.

I had this. It was caused by the "Shovel's friend" shovel, the one in the coffin just to right when you enter the cavern. The one with the Summon Cheeky Quisit scroll.
Throwing out that shovel - which has its unique description and cannot be grouped, so it is easy to find in the inventory - solved the problem.
