It's hammering time!

I figured something out, maybe this is really old news already, but it´s fun.

There´s a hammer in Act 1, that deals AoE damage when you land from a jump. That´s fine, the hammer is unremarkable otherwise.

However. Give it to a monk, and it's a weapon of mass destruction.
See, monks get 'Step of the Wind' bonus actions, that lets you jump for free so long as you have movement speed. And they come with LOTS of movement speed.

So, what you do is; you take your monk. Give him Crushers ring, longstrider etc. You can probably move 20-30m now.
Now haste him. You have double speed now already, so let's say roughly 50m.

But you also have two actions, dash - 80m, dash again, 110m.

You're a monk, so you took three levels in thief. Two bonus actions.
Step of the wind, dash 140m
Step of the wind, dash, 170m

You can now jump all across the battlefield at absolutely no cost, dealing damage to everything around.

I haven't tested this on high level, yet - I'm only level 4 on my game. But the jump thing works on a monk, you don't need proficiency.

Can you give the name of the hammer and where to find it? So people can try what you're suggesting on the Monk build? smile

Hamarhraft, found at Waukeen's Rest inside a chest located in Benryn's bedroom.

^ Thank you! Waukeen's Rest is one of the places I don't manage to clean out, because it's CONSTANTLY on fire. Do you just come back after long-rest and the fire goes out? Or are you meticulously just using water to put out the fire in every room? xD

Does the jump do Bludgeoning damage? Because if it does, I can see this being helpful during the Grym battle.

Personally I just loot the whole place as it's burning, so don't really mind being on fire since I do it with my own character or Karlach who are resistant to fire (both are Zariel Tieflings) grin

BUT thankfully Larian now made it so that the place is no longer on fire once all the people are saved and leave for Baldur's Gate celebrate

As for the hammer's damage, it's 1d4 Thunder damage on jump.

Tried it on (somewhat) higer levels, and it works like a charm. I added a potion of glorious vaulting, for good measure. Cleared out Nere and compatriots in two turns just just hopping about like a rabbit.

I didn't know there was a non-burning Waukeen's Rest. I just cast 'create water' on one character, preferebly someone with Magic Missile to nuke the doors. Haste that character and go into turn-based mode. Easy-peasy. Dash, here, jump there.

Awesome! When I do my next playthrough I'm going to loot it more thoroughly now that the fire goes out. Previously, even if I cleared out Waukeen's Rest, went to the underdark, came back up 3-4 longrests later, it STILL appeared to be on fire with the Flaming Fist girl praying outside.

My cousin is in Act 1, so I grabbed his character, unlinked him, made him toss back a fire resistance potion and ran straight to Benryn's room. Grabbed the chest, brought it out and made Astarion unlock it xD GOT THE HAMMER! Woo. Okay so I put the hammer on and made him jump around and I was expecting like thunderwaves from his feet, but it was more like a small transparent circle xD Underwhelming 8'D I'm going to grab a hireling and make him a Monk.

Be sure to use Cunning action: Dash and Step of the Wind: Dash; as STOW doesn't appear to stack.

Here is an earlier thread about Hamarhraft. Using seems a bit monotonous. Are you still having fun after the initial thrill of discovery of the mechanic?

Oh no, it would be *incredibly* boring to go through the game like this. I just like to muck about and find fun comnbinations. Like someone enlarging an owlbear and leaping down from ten stories up. I wouldn't build around that, but it's fun to try out, nonetheless.

I believe a potion of fly triggers the thunder too. And then you add all the damage riders like Phalar Aluve, various rings, divine favour etc... Neat trick when first discovered.
