In games like these I have horrible restartitis.
200 hours in, 89% in act 1 and 10% in act 2. 1% in act 3

Even with great character changes, I keep having restart troubles.
Tav or Durge or Origin?

Selunite cleric sounds like fun, but something to do from start on.
Argh. Choices.

So I finally conquered it and played a Ancient Paladin switched to Archfey Lock and finally Swords Bard, which was the class that stuck. Gathered up Wyll, Shadowheart and Gale and yay, a proper playthrough finally. I make good progress and am in a romance with Gale.

Then, right after my last romantic night with Gale
we near the heart of the absolute in act 2 of the aboslute and Gale, and I tell Gale to do what he needs to do.

He goes nucleair and blows up everyone. End credits roll. A fake ending. frown

Story wise it fitted, it was a satisfying end for my character arc, if less for the Sword Coast.
I tried to treat it as a game over and reloaded, but continueing the campaign doesn't feel right. I tried to continue a bit but there is a feeling in me that says that that campaign has ended. It feels way different that a regular game over.

I quit the game for a whole two weeks but I can't get fully into it anymore. My bard's game, no.
A restart with a Durge paladin/Selune cleric.... hmmm, I like the character but can't assemble a proper group I like. Shadowheart's game? Rogue durge?.... argh....

The way the event in Act 2 was handled really retriggered my restartis and burned me out of the game.

Couldn't it just
be a game over instead a false end?

I suddenly wonder if you get the Honour Achievement for doing it that way. I mean, you *did* finish and murder the Absolute.

Fear my wrath, for it is great indeed.

If you want to do, what a Goddess commands without putting thought into it, it's an ending. It's maybe a bit mean that you never get an signal when Gale's feelings on the matter and the answer to "How are you feeling?" change - and that you don't get the introspection at all when you aren't romancing him. But I do like it as a statement about blind faith.

That is an interesting question! Do you get the Tactician Achievement for it?

Well, OP, I think you've just cured my restartitis. (And I think I've got you beat, I've got almost 500 hours in game and have reached the Underdark only once so far.)

My biggest problem is choosing between Gale and Astarion at this point, because each of those guys likes a totally different kind of person. Personally I think Gale deserves better than the Durge, but of course that's subjective. So maybe I'll just play a Custom character until Gale "does the right thing" and then play a Durge.

I think you should just go ahead and play a Durge now. End your Bard's story there. And it did take you awhile to come to the conclusion that the first character was a Bard, so I think you should just keep experimenting with the Durge class and party makeup until that settles in, and let it be your complete playthrough. Unless of course, some other shocking thing happens and then you'll have to reevaluate once again.
