Now I have seen the Missing Letters quest cited as an immersion-breaking side quest in the beginning of act 3, and I would call it that also in its present state. Why would you try to figure out why carrier pigeons are going missing, when the world is essentially about to end? So here is my suggestion for improving the quest.

Spoilers for the Missing Letters quest below.

As we find out, it’s Gale’s tressym Tara who has been hanging out on a nearby rooftop, eating all of the pigeons. If you have Gale in your party, he basically tells her, “Tara stop that!” And she acquiesces grudgingly and flies off. Then my understanding is that you can find her on a couple of other rooftops in the city, and each time she leaves behind a piece of equipment. I remember reading about the equipment pieces and finding them underwhelming, and wondering why anyone would search the rooftops for them. I also found it odd that there was no sense of a reunion between Tara and Gale. So much has happened to him and he hasn’t seen her in ages, and he’s just like “get out of here” and she just leaves? I thought that was awfully weird.

So here is a suggestion to make the quest feel better and more relevant. Why not make it about a reunion between Tara and Gale? And he fills her in on everything that’s been happening to him, and she’s happy to reunite with him, and she even comes and hangs out in camp for the rest of the game? Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a kitty cat in camp? And she can just be a merchant and you can buy those underwhelming pieces of equipment from her. Even better if you could summon her in battle! But I wouldn’t expect that part because I know Gale likes to keep her safe.

What do you folks think? Wouldn’t this make the quest feel so much better and less irrelevant? If it’s about one of the companions reuniting with his best friend and hanging out with her from now on?

On a pure gameplay level, I was wondering if more content was planned for the rooftops in the Lower City - as they have some detail and are well traversable - and the Missing Letters quest was intended to direct your attention to the roofs as possible areas of exploration. For the rest:

The quest feels very unfinished. In the Lower City Tara treats you like a stranger even if you play as Origin Gale; as Ametris recently pointed out, Gale has no real reaction if you harm Tara; there also are some unconnected chat lines about Gale's mom and his surname in the (romance ?) conversation with Gale after meeting Tara, when he invites you to Waterdeep. I agree that it would be nicer if you could invite Tara to camp after meeting her (maybe coax her with fish or boiled beholder eyestalks, as beholder jerky is her favourite dish) and have a longer camp scene during which she and Gale can properly reunite and you are given a deeper insight into the Dekarios family life.

A longer scene with Tara might also help explain Tara's catflap of displacement, a teleportation spell she invented, which gets mentioned in the epilogue, but I think is never spoken about in the game proper outside of Gale's Origin. As for the Origin, I would really like for Tara to return to camp after snacking on the pigeon's in because I dearly miss her in Act 3.

Tara as a summon in battle could be fun because she is an accomplished spellcaster and who doesn't love a fireball flinging tressym. ^^

Personally I found the whole interaction extremely off-putting because despite obviously knowing it's Gale's cat due to how much Gale talks about her during the celebration party, throughout the entire interaction the main character is dumb as a brick and cannot recognize her nor even bring up Gale during the conversation.

And even worse was when I went back to camp immediately afterwards hoping to tell Gale about the encounter and see him burst with happiness as he considers tracking her down to bring her to our camp, but of course... nothing to tell about it.

In an RPG it's an extreme NO NO to not have stuff like this connected and fully reacted to, which is why I found it so utterly disappointing that it really bothered me. May as well just delete her from the game and make it any other cat at that point.
