Hi all,

I am trying Paladin and was planning to play Lae'zel, but also need Astarion I guess.
I know the best set up is Paladin, Shadowheart, Astarion and Gale.

Would make sense to swap Shadowheart for Lae'zel or I would not have enough heal and removing curse spells?

Thank you.

You should play with the characters that you like best. You don’t need Astarion. If there’s a particularly difficult lock, go back to camp and get him. But otherwise, don’t worry about it, just play with who you like.

At this point in DnD evolution a dedicated Rogue is not necessary. Other classes have access to Lockpicking/Trap Disarming.

Your Paladin could that person - take the Charlatan Background ... and besides Sleigh of Hand you'll get Deception to put your off-radar CHA to Good Use.

As to Healing - there are so many Healing Potions that Spells are for emergencies, specifically the best spell in this category - Healing Word. It is an Extra Action and works half way across the map smile

There are some curses in the (later) game which can really wreck your day. I would never go without the ability to remove them. I like to have Shadowheart in the group, firstly she looks good and secondly as Cleric she can swap all spells as she likes and does not need to learn the curse removing spell, other than Gale. At least one of them should have it.

Not having a good lockpick character hurts, too. Sometimes it can shut you out of quests (although mostly there are means to circumvent locked doors). My group is currently Sorceress, Shadowheart, Gale and Minsc, and sometimes I miss Astarion. My best lockpicker is Minsc (Barbarian), however not as good as Astarion. For my taste there should be at least a bonus of +10 to lockpicking before applying other buffs from Cleric or so.
