Like several others, I have been unable to get Beyond Divinity to run. It gives me an error window upon trying to run the Test on the Configtool

configtool MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Unable to read configuration file

One of the threads indicated the problem may be that the config.div file is being treated as a div(x) file by my pc. How do I determine if this is the case and more importantly, how do I reset things so it can read properly?

I have run dxdiag and my drivers are up to date (NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX graphics card) (DirectX version 9.0b) I don't appear to be failing any tests. Also I have run a couple of other games that use 9.0 DirectX (Spellforce is especially graphic intense so I'm pretty sure the card works fine)

Any help would be appreciated. I am sorry that this is a repeat of others questions but I did search the threads before posting and just couldn't find enough details to fix my particular version of the problem.

Thanks again in advance
Lewis H.

Welcome to the forum! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Have you reinstalled the game? Just to check. Blown on the disk, etc.

Or maybe manually install the configuration file?

The config.div file is present, it even seems to have the right information in it (I viewed it using wordpad) but I get an error on start up each time and it won't get past it (I've reinstalled 3 or 4 times. I'm trying to update NVidia to a slightly more up to date version. I'll let you know if that works. I'd still like to know if there's a property I need to reset to make sure div files are interpreted as div(x) movies though.

Hmm. Strange. Sorry, but I can't help you out anymore. ( Not that I did much in the first place).

I suggest emailing Larian technical suppourt. Tell them your problem and your specs.

Er, their email is. er, suppourt@larian.com ? Not quite sure actually. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> Er, I don't think its that one BTW.

In Windows Explorer, browse to the Beyond Divinity folder, switch to details view and check the Type column. Without a divx movie player installed, the config.div file should be listed as a 'DIV File'; with a player installed it could be called something like 'Divx video file'.

Try deleting the files config.div, slashed.cfg and slashed-d3d6.cfg from the Beyond Divinity folder, to force the configuration program to recreate them.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the game?

Raze, thanks for the response. I uninstalled and reinstalled again after making sure my drivers were up to date (Turns out what I had was the latest. Although the combined NVidia package was updated this year, the GeForce 4 driver has not been changed since last year). I made sure Norton Autoprotect was off for sure. Unfortunately, I still get the same Slash.dll problem and error message. I also made sure .div files are seen as DIV files. I am really unsure what else to try at this point. I am not the type of person to rant unreasonably. I would like to get this game to run since I can't return it but it's not the end of life if I can't. However, I would be hesitant about buying Larian games in the future. I'm sure this is little concern. I'm just one customer. I have nothing but good things to say about Divine Divinity and many people seem to be enjoying the new game (wish I was one of them). If you have any other suggestions let me know

Well, I finally got it working and I'm a little embarassed about what I was doing wrong. Just in case it will help anyone else though. Here is what I had to do: UPDATE MY DRIVERS. Yes that's right just like everyone said.

What I had done wrong though was download the updated drivers from NVIDIA, run it and then I didn't follow the steps in the read me and force it to actually update itself. As a result, it just pulled in it's same old driver from the Windows/System32/DRIVERS folder instead of pulling in the updates I had just downloaded. Pretty stupid huh?

For others with NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX video, The latest driver is:
nv4_disp.dll 6.14.0010.5672 dated 3/24/2004.

You NEED this update to run this game because apparently that is when they
added the DirectX 9 support. It is available at the NVIDIA website (www.nvidia.com) from the downloads tab. (I'm sure most of you know that but there are a few people who aren't familiar with this stuff)

Thanks again to everyone for responding and I apologize for wasting the forum's time and space because I couldn't follow the instructions in a read me file. I hope my idiocy helps someone else.
