TL;DR

In Korea, people don't know that Wyll is a gentlemanly noble.

In the Korean translation, Wyll refers to Mizora as a bitch and uses a rude tone.

The Korean translation does not reveal what kind of character Wyll is and even makes him feel vulgar.

????? Wyll? ???? ??? ? ???.

??? ???? Wyll? Mizora? bitch?? ??? ???? ??? ????.

??? ??? Wyll? ?? ????? ?? ???? ??? ???? ?? ????? ??? ???.

I've played for over 150 hours, and during this time, I've thought of 'Wyll' as an insolent and immature noble.

150?? ?? ????? ?? 'Wyll'? ???? ??? ???? ?? ???.

Before reading this post: This post was written using an AI translator. First of all, I apologize if this post is not suitable for the forum. I'm not very familiar with using forums, so if this post is not in the right place, I would appreciate it if you could recommend an appropriate location.

?? ??? ??: ? ?? ai ???? ????. ?? ? ?? ??? ??? ??? ????. ?? ??? ?? ??? ?? ???. ? ?? ??? ???? ??? ??? ?? ????? ???.

I had always thought Wyll was the typical 'noble born into privilege and tired of the oppression and responsibilities, rebelling against authority and enjoying mingling with common folk' character that often appears in media.

So, when I learned that Wyll was close to his father, had a happy childhood, and became the 'Blade of Frontiers' through a pact with a devil, he seemed like a foolish person obsessed with the hero mentality.

?? ???? Wyll? ???? ?? ??? '???? ??? ?? ??? ???? ??, ??? ???? ???? ?? ?? ??? ???', '??? ??? ??? ? ??? ?? ???? ???? ???' ????? ???.

??? Wyll? ???? ????, ??? ????? ???, ??? ???? '??? ?'??? ??? ?????? ?? ??? ?, ?? ?? ??? ?? ??? ???? ???.

I believe 'Larian Studios' is already aware of a critical issue with the Korean translation of 'Baldur's Gate 3'. This has been pointed out consistently since the official Korean translation was provided. The problem is that all characters, regardless of gender, use the derogatory term '?' or '???' when insulting female characters.

'Larian Studio'? 'Baldur's Gate 3' ??? ??? ???? ???? ???? ?? ?? ?? ??? ????. ??? 'Baldur's Gate 3'? ????? ????? ??? ??? ????? ????, ??? ???? ?? ???? ??? ??? ???? ?? ?? '?', '???'??? ???? ???? ????.

In Korea, '?' is a derogatory term similar to 'bitch' in English, and like in English-speaking countries, it is a strong insult. However, '?' is even more offensive than 'bitch'. It is rather equivalent to c-word.

In Korean media, '?' is used much less frequently than 'bitch' in American media.

In K-romance dramas, the male lead never uses the term '?'. It is used to describe the ex-boyfriend of the female lead as trash. Generally, it can be seen in the dialogues of thugs, gangsters, and criminals, and is mainly used to depict the person using it as crude and disgusting.

Considering its severity, it is never heard on TV unscripted show. On YouTube, channels that frequently use '?' divide opinions sharply, and only viewers of a specific taste subscribe. Moreover, they usually target males rather than females.

???? '?'??? ???? ??? 'bitch'? ??? ???, ????? ??? ????? ??? ?? ????. ??? '?'? 'bitch' ??? ??? ?? ??? ????.

?? ????? 'bitch'? ???? ???? ???, ?? ?????? '?'? ?? ?? ????.

??? ??? ? ?????? '?'??? ???? ?? ???? ???. ? ???? ?????? ? ????? ?? ??? '?'? ?? ?? ????? ????? ????. ??? ???? ??, ???? ???? ? ? ??, ??? '?'? ???? ??? ???? ???? ???? ????? ?? ????.

??? ?? ?? ?? TV ????? ??? ?? ? ??. ??? ??? '?'? ?? ???? ??? ???? ?? ??? ?? ??? ????? ????. ?? ??? ????? ??? ???? ?? ??? ??? ??.

I don't need to explain what '??', an even more offensive term than '?', means. And the term '???', which combines the two words, is even worse.

'?'??? ?? ??? '??'?? ?? ???? ??? ??? ???. ? ??? ??? '???'??? ??? ??? ?? ???.

In Act 1, when Lae'zel and Shadowheart argue over the artifact, they call each other by names or use 'she'.

1??? Lae'zel? Shadowheart? ?? ??? ?? ?, ??? ??? ???? ????, she? ????.

(Spoiler alert)
(???? ??)

However, in the Korean version, all these are translated as '?' or appended with '?'.
Lae'zel = 'Githyanki ?'
her = 'that ?'
'thief ?', 'useless ?'...etc

??? ???? ? ??? ?? '?'?? ????? '?'? ???.
Lae'zel = '????(Githyanki)?'
her = '? ?'
'???', '????? ?'...?

Another problem with the translation of '?' is that the image of the counterpart held by the character, and the intention of the speech, are all simply expressed as 'bitch'. Users who encounter the game through this translation come to think that Shadowheart and Lae’zel think of each other as 'bitch', not even bothering to call each other by their proper names, showing a lack of respect for each other.

'?' ??? ? ?? ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ????, ??? ??? ?? 'bitch' ??? ???? ????? ???. ?? ???? ??? ??? ???? ????? ???? ??? 'bitch'?? ????, ???? ??? ??? ?? ??? ??? ???? ?? ???? ???? ??.

The character who suffered the most from this translation is Wyll. Because he always refers to Mizora as '?'. (Let me add that Karlarch also calls Mizora '???' whenever she appears.)

? ???? ?? ?? ? ??? ? ???? Wyll??. ???? Wyll? Mizora? ?? ???? ? ??? ?? '?'?? ???? ????. (????? Karlarch ?? Mizora? ??? ??? '???'?? ???.)

That's why I never thought of Wyll as a gentlemanly noble.

??? ??? ?? Wyll? ???? ????? ??? ?? ??.

Another reason I found him crude and insolent, along with his dialogues about Mizora, is the language used in the Korean translation.

In the Korean translation, Wyll, Gale, and Astarion all use the same tone. It doesn't significantly impact Gale and Astarion's characters if their tones are similar. But it's a problem if Wyll uses the same tone as them. The words and sentences he uses make it hard to realize he's a gentleman, let alone a cultured person from a noble family. His language is not serious and sometimes crude. (As I mentioned before, Wyll uses significantly more profanity than other characters.)

That's why I've always thought of Wyll as an 'insolent and immature noble'. His first appearance and the scene where he teaches the Tiefling children are charming enough, but after talking to him, that first impression disappears. Many people, including myself, leave Wyll at the camp and never take him on a journey or into the party. So we lose the opportunity to learn more about Wyll.

Mizora? ?? ?? ??? ???, ?? ?? ???? ????? ??? ? ??? ??? ??.

??? ???? Wyll? Gale? Astarion ?? ??? ??? ????. ?? Gale? Astarion? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ? ??? ?? ???. ??? Wyll? ??? ?? ??? ???? ?? ??? ??. ?? ???? ??? ????? ???? ????? ?? ???? ???. ?? ?? ???? ???? ?????? ??? ???? ???. ?? ??? ???? ???, ??? ????. (?? ??? Wyll? ?? ????? ???? ??? ?? ????.)

??? ?? Wyll? '???? ??? ??'?? ???? ?? ? ????. ? ???, Tiefling ???? ???? ??? ??? ??? ???, ?? ??? ? ? ? ???? ????. ?? ??? ?? ???? Wyll? ???? ?? ????, ??? ? ?? ??? ???. ??? ??? Wyll? ?? ? ??? ????.

I thought it was ridiculous that Wyll cared about the title 'Blade of Frontiers'. Even when he said that 'Mizora ?' insulted the 'Blade of Frontiers', I thought, 'why is he so obsessed with that title'. But now that I know he's a righteous and innocent person, I think he might feel a sense of responsibility for the title 'Blade of Frontiers'.
(Unfortunately, I can't make a precise guess. I thought Wyll was an ambiguous and unattractive character, so I almost skimmed through his dialogues.)

I also just realized that his contract with Mizora is one of the key devices showing who he is.

?? Wyll? '??? ?'??? ??? ??? ?? ?? ??????? ????. 'Mizora ?'? '??? ?'? ???? ??? ??? ? ?? '? ?? ? ??? ??? ??'?? ????. ??? ?? ???? ??? ????? ??? ????, ?? '??? ?'??? ??? ???? ??? ?? ??? ???? ???.
(???? ??? ??? ?????. ?? Wyll? ???? ?? ?????? ???? ???? ????, ??? ?? ??? ??? ?? ?? ???.)

?? Mizora? ??? ? ?? ?? ?? ???? ???? ??? ?? ? ???? ?? ??? ?? ???.

I'll never know how pure and romantic he is if he becomes a lover because I've already rejected him. Cause I didn't like him...

People who play the game in the future will also never know how righteous, pure, gentlemanly, and cultured he is. That is if this translation continues to be used.

Wyll? ??? ?? ?? ??? ???? ???? ???? ? ? ????, ?? ??? ?? ???. ?? ?? ???? ????.

??? ??? ?? ??? ?? ?? ??? ???? ????, ??? ????? ???? ???? ??? ?? ?? ???. ? ??? ???? ????? ???.

I hope Larian Studio would recognize the severity of the Korean translation. It's problematic that the user's image of Wyll is not good, but it's also heartbreaking to know how a character like Wyll, which Larian Studio has been developing over the years, has been ruined by a single mistranslation.

?? Larian Studio?? ??? ??? ???? ???? ??. Wyll? ?? ???? ???? ?? ??? ?? ?????, Larian Studio?? ??? ??? ? Wyll? ????? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ??? ???? ??? ?? ????? ??.

Lastly: I wanted to discuss this issue publicly. I thought it was meaningless to inquire again personally to Larian Studio, as they must have received numerous inquiries about this already. Also, I posted this because I hope that as many fans as possible, especially Wyll's fans, would be aware of this issue.

?????: ?? ??? ??? ?? ? ??? ???? ??. Larian Studio? ?? ?? ??? ??? ?? ? ??? ??? ???, ??? ?? ????? ???? ? ??? ??? ????. ?? ??? ?? ??, ?? Wyll? ??? ? ??? ?? ????? ?? ??? ?? ????.

Yeah, as it turns out Wyll is the least popular character overall because of this;

So, when I learned that Wyll was close to his father, had a happy childhood, and became the 'Blade of Frontiers' through a pact with a devil, he seemed like a foolish person obsessed with the hero mentality.

He is foolish and self-righteous and comes off as arrogant. Also he is a Warlock, which is sad enough in terms of class but worse he is a Warlock who sold his soul to become one which comes off as incompetent or desperate.

As for the use of language it's less shocking in English, but they really should correct the Korean translation if it gives the wrong idea about how vulgar he is. Thank you for pointing that out.

I have the English language version of the game, and I agree that especially in the early acts Wyll is immature and a bit rude, but he also seems to have a good heart and wants to do good things. It is unfortunate that the Korean translation resulted in more severe words, because that can certainly change the flavor of the character. I kind of wish he would just lose his warlock powers, and then I would turn him into a ranger, which seems a better fit in the end.

Wyll is one of so many characters in BG III who sells his or her soul in order to achieve some temporary objective. That seems to be the running theme in the whole game ... will you sell your soul to Mizora, or Raphael, or the Emperor, or the Absolute, or Shar, or Bhaal, or Myrkul, or Bane, or Auntie Ethel, or the Weave, etc. It's a lot different from the "coin on edge" theme of BG I & II, which I prefer.

Seems like the translation team didn't get the memo about the complete rewrite of Wyll to make him likeable bland.

Honestly Korean Wyll actually sounds cool and badass, we'd happily trade you our boring and bland Wyll for your better upgraded one.

Well, he IS a bone thrown to the Negro market. No surprise that the Koreans imagined that he talks like one.

Haha, that’s what I was thinking, they’ve got a misogynistic Wyll over there! A Wyll with some serious attitude. It’s *kind of* funny, but if things are exactly as OP says they are, then yeah, seems like a change is needed.

You know Buba68 we all get that you are troll but you're usually not an awful troll. That post was an exception.

I don't want to read racist posts like that one. And I'm not interested in discussing whether or not "negro market" was used in a racist manner, it was. Please delete the post.

I agree Buba68, kind of went too far with that one.

Ugh, I’m literally scared every time a black character is in a game because I just know I’m going to have to come across something racist.

He didn’t “kind of” go far. It was unnecessary plain and simple.

I agree that Buba68’s post was unacceptable, and any further racist language like that will result in a time out. Let’s draw a line and return to discussing the OP’s interesting post.
