Why are unproficient boots not allowing me to cast this completely unrelated spell? I can unequip them and then I'm able to cast the spell. I don't understand. What does equipment proficiency have to do with casting an unrelated spell?

If you wear armor that you aren’t proficient in, you aren’t able to cast spells. That includes any spell. It’s just how the game works.

What Ecc2ca said. It's just part of the rules.

In earlier editions there was a (flawed) rationale for it: spellcasting requires extensive somatic gestures that are difficult to produce if you are encased in steel. 3e allowed you take feats that allow you to cast only with your voice (or only with your body).

Essentially you are doing a little dance but can't dance in those boots.

Wow. That's a game mechanic I was completely unaware of. Thanks
