Hi. I'm an old BG1/BG2 player and have grown increasingly interested in BG3 thanks to others enthusiasm despite me not liking 5e.

I have very nearly bought the game except for one issue: the download size. It's not that my HD can't handle it, but I'm capped at 100GB of downloading per month and I share this connection with other members of the household. Is there a staged download where I can download the game in chunks over time, like over several months? Failing that, will the Deluxe physical edition contain the full game data or will it just include a downloader?

I'm okay with being patient, I have plenty of games to play and can wait until I have a better ISP, but just wanted to find out.

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, physical copies of the game will have most of the data on it (Just missing the patch updates, of which there are a few but nothing massive).

no there isn't and even if there was it would only be good until the next 120G patch comes out... 6 patches and 22 hotfixs later the game is not close to being stable

the best option is to take your laptop to a shop or mates place once a month or just play something else for a while

Well that's good to know. I'll give it some time then I guess. It'll be just as good later.

If anyone has a suggestion for Larian's older games, I am open to them.

Physical copies like Taril said will have all the games data on it with the latest upgrade patch. The only thing missing will be if any more patches come out later. That's why the Xbox version will now have 4 disks instead of 3 as originally intended.

The best I can suggest is GOG which allows for downloading DRM free(ish) installers. They come in 4GB chunks:

Perhaps, if you have a friend with uncapped internet they could download it for you (I know I used to do it in the past). Or you could get couple friends to download different parts in a month and then combine them.

As others mentioned the game does get some chunky patches every couple months, but with the manual installer you could not update immediately and download the update over time (or through friends) (not sure how those are handled through manual installer - current offering displays small hotfixes only, and installer itself is patched to the last major patch. It is not impossible that you would have to download whole installer again, and reinstal the game for the next major patch.)

If you never used GOG before - they do have a client called GOG Galaxy through which you can manage and download your library, but if you login to their store through a browser, you can download installers (like in the picture) and instal the games offline. Plus, you don't need a client and can keep the installer for the future - downside you need to download a chunky installer and than instal the game which will almost double the required disk space (you can of course erase the installer afterwards if you are not interested in keeping it).

If you are interested in Larian's previous games, you can get them there as well and download the same way. They shouldn't get patches these days (not any major ones at least), so once you download them, they shouldn't require further data.

Unfortunately, with higher fidelity games became chunky and highspeed unlimited interned became almost a requirement for modern gaming.

I would definitely recommend the Divinity: Original Sin 2.
There is also a Divinity: Original Sin - The Source Saga bundle that has both D:OS1 and D:OS2, but i only played D:OS2 so i do not know anything about D:OS1.

D:OS2 was a great fun. It is a bit wacky at times, but i liked it.
I think it is using a ruleset completely made up by Larian, it definitely isn't 5e.
The gameplay is very similar to BG 3, but there is A LOT more options for interactions with environments and surfaces, it has telekinesis (teleport oil barrel on top of enemy and make it explode, or teleport enemy into lava, etc.), you can do some insane and fun things if you want.
It isn't as cinematic as BG3 (where every conversation is basically a custscene, D:OS2 dialogues are just text based, but still voiced).
You can play a custom character, or pick one of 6 Origin characters (each has their own backstory that often-ish affect situations in the game, takes you to different special places, or provides various different options and reactions/dialogues).
You can play alone in Singleplayer, or in Multiplayer (up to 4 players) as a Coop or PvP (not 100% sure about the PvP - i did split from the party at some point to test it, and i could fight my friends, and play the game in parallel with them, but i did so only for a while, so i do not know what happens if you try to progress into next Act while others remain in Act behind you or if that is even possible).

It is an older game, but the graphics still holds up (for this type of game).
The D:OS2 Definitive Edition is ~60 GB download, so you may still struggle a bit.

...watch some official trailers and other official videos - they should provide enough information (and without spoilers) for you to make up your mind as to whether it is a game you would like.
I think anybody who likes CRPGs with turn-based combat, should definitely have a look at this one.

Here is a good short video that should give you some idea:
(crap... just watching it makes me want to play it again, but i still have BG3 to finish :-D)
