In the ending
when the Emperor betray you (or, in his version, you betray him), he summons the guardians in the final battle to fight alongside him.

Larian has never addressed it - what are those creatures and how they contradict the story before (they also never addressed the bug when my own guardian doesn't look exactly the way I create them).

The fact is, they are physical beings,
not dependent on the Emperor (you can kill him first). You can "spare" them all with knockouts, however, in all following events/endings they are presumed dead.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could "capture" one? Of course this is the end of the story, but it can be addressed in the short narration or animation etc.

Leaving it as is makes it look incomplete, and as they are not explained at all it just looks like an afterthought and unfinished part.

Yeah, that part was weird. I'm not sure what was going on there.

There are multiple possible interpretations of the true nature of the guardians. One of them could be that they are thralls or husks that the Emperor can control. But that doesn't explain how they can appear on the Astral Plane though... perhaps the Emperor kidnapped and enthralled people and used their appearance when he talked to us in our dreams. How did he do that? Magic I suppose??

Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize
