There’s a great (and gushing) review of the plot around Lae’zel by “The Game Essayist” which I wholeheartedly agree with. It’s not fully new (5 months old), but I didn’t see it here yet, so I wanted to share it:

Quote
“It’s incredible how much pressure Larian is able to put on every conversation by building an atmosphere of hostility around you … this is where Lae’zel truly comes into her own as a character with agency”.

Quote
she finds her own dream during the journey and can completely throw it to the wayside in the hopes of becoming a free Gith who lives life on her own terms.

You can exchange the name and say the exact same thing about Shadowheart, so similar are their stories.

And I find them to be just average to be honest. That they are still the better ones in BG3 is more of a problem with all other characters.

I had my first playthrough with Lae’zel and I’m currently playing my second playthrough with Shadowheart, and I disagree.

The intensity with Lae’zel as companion is much higher, and you’re constantly on the edge, but it is cheerful, while with Shadowheart you see the dark parts inside herself, but she is fiercely loyal to you.

A similarity is that both are being betrayed by the ones they serve, but where that leads them and which themes they explore is very different.

Shadowheart lied to you from the start. Lae’zel is brutally honest.
Shadowheart can detach from the fight and retreat into family life while Lae’zel chooses the next battle to pursue.
Shadowheart faces her fear (swimming, wolves) while Lae’zel accepts her own desires even where they go against her upbringing (tenderness).

Did you play the game with both as companion?

Lae'zel tops my list of BG3 MVPs. She got a hook in early and just never let go

Best Companion Character in a supporting role for me, no contest. Like sure Shadowheart and everyone else was nominated, of course, but Lae'zel takes home the tiny statue in my head hehe. The chaos and the battle maneuvers - she's got it all! For me BG3 takes the GOAT mostly on the Strength of Lae'zel. It was basically her, Scratch, and the apostle of Myrkul that sold me on this one. Then Jaheira to ice it!

The saddest thing to me about no BG4 is that I won't get to see Lae'zel hit level 20 and take it all the way. Like some sort of face off with Vlaakith and Tiamat, that just goes off the deep end into Dragon lore?! I honestly think she could carry a sequel all by herself if she had to. I wish there was a such a thing as the Githyanki Warrior's stronghold, like with a training ground and trophy wall that looks like that scene from Predator 2 lol. Or where we maybe get to see the captured Neogi Spelljammer on full display. The tale of the Red Comet feels like it could be a cool level 13+ campaign where the other companions could get in on the mix, since everyone is basically a demi god already, a planar adventure to the far realms would have been fun. A visit to Tu'narath, just so we can hear the Narrator say it again! One could wish right

I am deeply puzzled by the fact that in the first game I was totally enchanted by Lae'Zel. I felt that I had found the perfect companion. I drank every word from the mouth of this character. And during the second game, she annoyed me so much that I freed her from the cage, told her to go her way, and then I didn't load the save when the githyanki killed her in the battle at the bridge. I don't understand it. Suddenly, the way she spoke made me want to throw her overboard at the first meeting. Strange.
