I’m currently doing a Pact of the Chain play through and for kicks I decided to name my Imp familiar (Scalic) and imagine a bit of dialogue and personality.

Does anyone else do the same? Or have I been playing too long and need a break.

Scupper the fearless crab warrior doesn't speak much, he just likes to PINCH, and that is enough for me.

Haha. Now I want a crab familiar and name it Septa. smile She'd be a cute but pompous nag.

I'm playing an feylock/ore bard in our DnD campaign and she has a fairy dragon named Cilia, who has a lot of personality. I'm planning on playing her in the game after patch 7 and will use the mod that allows for more familiars, so that Cilia can join the group.
Otherwise yes, I name all my familiars, my rangers raven was called Edgar ( of course) and my spider Arachne ( after the very nice spider in the Alex Verus novels, but also because of the character from greek mythology).

I would have loved it if the familiars and animal companions had names and a bit more personality, and would have happily given up the flexibility of being able to just summon whatever I felt like that day.

My only character so far with a familiar was my Oghma devotee with a pet raven, which unlike the other familiars (I think) does have a name, and I was happy to stick with “Quoth” for the Poe and Pratchett references. Though if it had just been called “Raven” I’d have chosen something else, and will be naming future pets. And yes, I did imagine him muttering to himself as he scouted out the terrain, and the conversations he’d have with my character on his return.

I also wish familiars had actually been able to do more, such as discover waypoints and interact with small holes, so their scouting was more useful.

First I thought that I didn't do this, but then I remember my mummy summon and I realize I do kind of RP her. Maybe not a familiar, but that mummy meant more to me than any of the other undead summons. I imagine the conversations would be rather one sided.

Hah, I love that. Pet ravens sound really cool.

I played D&D as a Beast Master Ranger last year and role-played my wolf as a massive dog. The rest of the party got to pet her whenever we rested, and then she'd go and bite some monster's face off.

It was much more fun than just having her as a class feature. In fact, one of the best moments for my character in that game is when the wolf died in a dungeon, and he pulled her back out so we could find a cleric to Raise Dead.

Inspired by this thread, I'm going even more all-out with my familiar RP in the new honour mode run I've started (I'm pausing my other one as I want to use my dwarven monk to try to get the punch-drunk achievement, and as I'm lucky enough to be playing the patch 7 beta I don't think I'll be able to get achievements until that rejoins the main release branch).

My new character is a very elfy elf divination wizard/cleric of Mystra, and her familiar is a fey spirit that takes the form of a cat and is called Chakla (a bit of googling for spirit cats told me that a cha kla is a Thai ghost that appears as a cat, and was believed to be used by sorcerors to attack their enemies).

And I'm very happy as I've just found that, contrary to what I said above, Chakla can indeed interact with burrow holes to scout out hard to reach areas! I'm not sure if that was a change in a previous patch that I missed because I'd stopped trying, or a new patch 7 feature. Either way ... yaayyy celebrate

This is definitely new, in patch 6 there is no option to use small holes as familiars. This is a wonderful addition to the game! I wish it was out there from day 1 when we didn't have meta knowledge of the map and scouting was a real thing.

i always like to have a familiar, pet, companion of some kind in Tabletop play with friends.

in BG3 i use mods to:

- have Tara join the party with Gale.

- boost Shovel's stats allowing Wyll to choose Pact of the Blade but still get a familiar by talking to Shovel so she can be resummoned.

- turn Scratch from a familiar to a "ranger animal companion" (you don't need to play ranger) using his ball i summon him to my side. he's swapped to Shadowheart after i get US.

i also get mods for Boo, normal Familiars, Quothe The Raven, US, and Mage Hand. just in case. i know a guy whos thinking about making an owlbear cub summon mod as well.
