Just curious, who has recommendations for a game that actually works? Anything similar and functional out there?

Define similar. All other cRPGs on offer are either old or/and relatively low budget. Closest one can get are Larian's previous titles: D:OS1&2. If you are interested in the ruleset there isn't much too choose aside from Solasta. For cinematic narratives - there is actually quite a lot, but with a far less RPGness to go around.

If you ask for cRPG in general... here is a list like any other:

Can fully recommend Divinity Original Sin 2.

After finishing BG3's Early Access during its first month I wanted to play something that is actually finished and that's how I came across Larian's DOS2. A beautiful work of art with a colorfully unique art style and an incredibly grim story that is fully developed with love and passion, which is why some of its aspects are better than BG3's will ever be.

Depends what you mean by similar. Divinity Original Sin uses the same party controls and is turn based, but has a different character building system. I recall playing the first one and liking it, but that was a long time ago. I did not like the combat (armor system) of DOS2, it made all the battles feel repetitive. Writing was also not very memorable.

There are of course the original BG games, which use the same setting, but play in real time with pause and optional autopause. They are old, but on PC you can add mods which really improve the experience. And there are a lot of mods available for both BG1&2, frankly more interesting than what I could find for BG3.

I find BG3 despite its untidy Act 3 to be far superior in every other way to DOS2, which was a very fine game (Definitive Edition). Some issues will remain no doubt once Larian stops providing patches but we’re not at that point yet.

I’d also wager BG3 will be better than whatever Larian produces next. Perhaps the next project will have superior graphics etc but I shudder at the thoughts of what will result from Larian unencumbered by 5e feeling free to unleash all of their homebrew nonsense, surfaces, and general silliness . No doubt Act 3 will once again be a rushed to production affair.

I agree. I do think the combat was fun, but everything else... I was thoroughly uninterested by the story and the characters. Can't even remember what happens or what their deals are, which is surely something considering I did finish it.

Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous are always a good pick.

As to D&D: Solasta. Nothing too fancy, but knows its limitations and deals pretty neatly with them. Not a character-driven game tho precisely because of it: On a budget, you cannot do it all at once.

More recent: SKALD. Mix of oldschool Ultima (big Larian inspiration), Commodore pixel art and Lovecraft horrors. It's also cheap.
