The different names are because they're different things.
"Update" is referring to "Community Update" wherein it is the developers talking about what they're doing in a blog post.
"Patch" is referring to major updates where new content or support is added to the game.
"Hotfix" is referring to smaller changes that are attempting to ammend bugs and glitches.
