I restarted the game now. So my hero is a swordwielding mage now. And something occurred to me: if I fight with a one-handed weapon and a shield, does it make a difference if I boost my one-handed style or my one-handed with shield style? Will only the latter actually do something for me?

Also, my DK gets to be the ranged supporter this time. (This means mainly all the supportive skills - Alchemy, Identify, Trapdetecting, Pickpocket, Arrow-Converting etc. - with anything left over in bow or crossbow skills - once I've decided which I want, that is.) So, which are better? Bows or crossbows?

1H skill will ONLY boost your skill if you're fighting with a one handed weapon WITHOUT a shield
with shield skill will ONLY boost your skill if you're fighting with a one handed weapon WITH shield

"Better" is somewhat subjective of course, so I'll try for objective information:
bows: piercing damage (or shadow), agility based (extra dam from agility)
crossbows: crushing damage (or shadow, bone), strength based (extra dam from strength)

Speed: Without investing much points in reload time, crossbows are faster (one point in reload time: reload speed 9, each additional point reload speed +1)
Later on bows are faster (one point in reload time: reload speed 2, each additional point reload speed +2)

Damage: Crossbows can do more damage than bows

Accuracy: For bows, you will profit from higher agility (to use your weapon and do extra weapon damage), but raising points in accuracy weapon skill starts at 16 (each additional point gives +8)(keep in mind though that crossbow skills can't be raised as high as bow skills in the beginning because the teachers for the crossbow skills are not as good)
For crossbows, you don't need to have a high agility and probably won't have a high agility, but raising points in accuracy weapon skill starts at 72 (each additional point gives +8)

So, after this very objective info, I'll give you my very subjective opinion:
I find crossbows better for early game (since I usually start by dumping points in strength for better armour, crossbows better with strength; and starting speed higher)
But bows better for late game (high agility DOES make a difference for hitting enemies, plus you get extra weapon damage from the agility; and after dumping points in reload times, the bows are definitely faster -> this for me being the main advantage of bows)

Okay, thanks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Will go for bows in that case.

Meh about the shield. Can't wait to get to the teacher "with shield" in that case. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
