Is it just me or is it impossible to buy shields? I could not find a single merchant (not on the battlefields nor in game) selling shields (other than those I sold to them beforehand). Are decent shields rarer than holy water or was I just unlucky?

And I spent hours jumping back and forth between BF and game at the beginning of A4 - which gave me great equipment other than a shield (which I was actually looking for.)

And the shields I had drop usually weren't magical - or if they were, they had at best two mods. I finally finished the game with a shield with 20 block, 8 armour, fire resistance (which I didn't need as it was maxed already) and 3 charmslots.

No, I could buy shields => in the BF, in the game. Was this your first game or the one you are playing now, Lira?
There are 12 different kind of shields and 2 unique ones (you can't buy them )

But your's sounds good, as the base ones (including unique) range in armour from 2-7 and in blocking from 5-15

Nope. My second one (which I just finished btw).

I didn't pay as much attention to my equipment the first time through. I mainly used what I found. But this time I really tried to get good equipment - and to this effect I kept jumping back and forth between BF and normal game. But it was impossible to get shields. The armour-merchant offered me everything - but shields.

Hm, I recall having to wade through shields (more those I found due to battles) - strange
what about respawning of BF goods? Still no shields? Or do you merely mean the in-game merchants?

Lira, on your 2nd way through BD => did you find out the method to avoid instant deaths? (One of your critique pts) on your 1st way through. Or did you simply avoid these trapped chests/cocoons altogether?

Well, I remembered the two dangerous imp-chests and also that winechests are usually trapped. And so I saved before opening them. And with the knowledge that I was expecting an insect-swarm or something, I knew I had to move away quickly - and I only died to one of them when I was moving too slowly. But I got that one at second try as well! Hah!

Well, I jumped back and forth between BF and in-game so the BF-merchants respawned goods. And even after three hours I did not get a single (decent) shield. The only shields the armour-merchant had were those I had sold to him.

The rest of my equipment was quite outstanding by then, though. Every item with lots of mods and most of them with three charm-slots and some with four even.

Btw, anyone know why I can't equip my ranaar-skeleton with a bow? As I like my char, I am continuing in the BF for a bit. So I took all my DK's skillpoints and used them for my ranaar-skelly.
It was so nice having nearly everything die from my DK's splitting arrows before I could even think of touching it, so I wanted to just throw all his equipment onto the skelly - but I can not put the bow into the weapon-slot (and it's not due to lack of strength or agility. :/)

lira, concerning the shield question, there IS a particualr BF monster that drops almost exclusivley shields (most all magical at the higher levels), but i'm sorry, i don't quite remember which monster it is. i believe that it is the red deathknight foe that drops these.
here are a couple shots of shields - finishing shield
and early shield
you'll notice that both these pics were from the end of act II!
good luck. shields are mostly a monster drop, so don't feel unlucky not finding them available at the various merchants.

Really? Weird! If it's indeed the Red Deathknight, then my game really doesn't like giving me shields. Because I noticed that monster as being the only one never to drop anything at all, not even piles of gold. (Even if it had a higher level than me!!) Very weird. - But thanks for the info. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

Hmm, after checking your shields and remembering those I found: is it simply impossible for shields to have more than one or two mods (other than blocking, armour, iniative and shield), and maybe charm-slots? That would explain why I couldn't find any "good" shields.

Btw, the character sheet doesn't say anything about blocking. How is it calculated? Just the amount of the shield + the amount I get from my blocking skill? And is it a percentage?

Another question concerning armour: I notice that during the first two acts I permanently have my equipment break: mainly my DK's bow and my Hero's armour. Lateron I never have to repair anything. Neither the bow nor the armour. I find that just plain weird.

It's a % per level => +2%, +5%, +8%, +10% and added to the shield etc.

Strange, I had a cord on DK and a shadow bow => had to repair them in all levels. Therefore I refrained from using that bow. It was good, but... I didn't spend pts into repair, so it was tedious to return to traders. Same for that cord, I forgot permanently to change it. I was so fedup with this stupid cord that I chucked it out and left my DK without a belt (until I remembered to equip him with something better ).

Hmm, not sure I understand that correctly. That's per level I've invested in the blocking skill, right? So if I invest four points and have a shield with 20 blocking, I'll block 30% of the attacks?

Adds to the chance of being blocked IIRC. So, if you have a shield blocking 20% and then lvl 4 => 10% => yes, I think it's 30% then. So, your chance to get hit is reduced by 30%.
