So after 1000hours, 7 complete play runs of the game (5 on tactician, 2 on honor mode). I have these things to say about the state of the game as of Patch 8. I have been playing D&D since the late 80s, 1989 to be exact. I have issues with these things, and they are all minor except one.
So my minor issues is the lack of some races, or race penalties. Like no Githzerai, yet you have the Githyanki, couldnt be bothered to have a subrace option for the Gith? Or just write a few different dialog lines for them? You put in dozens if not hundreds of lines for Deep Gnomes and Duegar which are about as rare in D&D as Gith are. But again, minor issue.
Then the lack of sunlight sensitivity to the underdark races, Duegar, and Drow. I mean for the players it could be played off as the tadpole effecting them. But interactions with other races would not change much. You start strong in act 1 with a few unique lines about your race. But nothing really past that. I mean act 3, a Drow walking down the middle of the street in Baldur's Gate, would have a small army of Flaming Fist following them everywhere they went.
Starting as a Githyanki fighter, does not start you with the Githyanki half-plate like Lae'zel.
Humans, humans in D&D are some of the most versatile races in D&D, but in BG3 they are some of the most bland and fall flat races in the game. Why play a human when literally everyone is better?
Games timeline. Without spoilers, lets just say the choice made for a certain character to be Balduran, does not work for the game being in 1492DR, when that individual disapeared in the mid 1000s DR. Some 350+ years prior to the events of BG3. Hell Moonrise towers werent even built till the 1300s DR. So that would not have happened.
Then we get to Act III.. this is the major problem.
Act II ended great, you had a complete story, it felt like you had experienced a fantastic journey, then you get to Act III and it turns to a chaotic, hot, steaming mess. Act 3, is where everything falls apart. It feels like 2 acts were smashed into one muddled mess of an act. A whole district was cut from the game, Upper City, and it makes the boss fights feel cheap and lacking. I mean at this point you have hit Level 12 the level cap for the game and you are just playing through to finish the story.
If I were to ask Larian to do anything else with BG3, it would be to fix Act 3, and make it the two separate acts it should have been, or at least unlock it so modders can finish it correctly.
