I assume "1x Lockpick", the first thing that pops up when you try to pick a lock, has some meaning. Perhaps it means some lockpick bonus, like maybe there are diamond encrusted lockpicks later in the game that give you 1.2x or 2x multiplier on lockpicking ability, whatever that would mean.

But there are no such things AFAIK so what was it originally intended to mean? It's clearly not number of lockpicks in your bag.

Or were there proposed hyperlocks that might consume 2 when lockpicked, and would show 2x Lockpick in such a thing, to warn you of their consumption, but never made it into the game?

Maybe there are 2x hyperlocks in the late game I haven't stumbled over yet?

"1x Lockpick" means you're using 1 Lockpick.

It is not a modifier, but a denotation of a resource you're using (Whether or not you consume said lockpick depends on how well you roll)

Are there rolls that might consume 2 lockpicks? Otherwise seems pointless to add the 1x.

No, unless you fail in which case you need another lockpick. If you fail often enough and run out of lockpicks, the icon will be greyed out and you cannot proceed. As Taril explained it just tells you that you need one to open the lock.

I feel it is more obvious with the trap disarming kits as you run out of those more often than you run out of lockpicks.
