Hi, all,

There may be many threads like this one already, but I have gone through them and I couldn't find any solution to my problem with the game.

It keeps crashing, crashing and crashing all over again. I bought the game last month to play it with my girl friend, at first I wasn't thrilled but throughout progressing, I have got into it and I really want to play it with her, but as I went through some more cut scenes of the game play, it froze and after few seconds, it popped-up with the following error:

DirectX Error

The game has encountered an unrecoverable DirectX error and will
shut down.
This error may be triggered by reasons that are not related to Baldur's
Gate 3.

Please try the following before restarting:
- Disable any screen recording software you may be running
- Make sure all your Windows updates have been installed
- Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed
- Disable SLI/CrossFireX

You could also try contacting developer support with your gold.log
and your DxDiag.txt.
If you make significant changes to your system (like installing updates
or drivers), please send us before and after
versions of those files. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

So, I started digging for solutions in this forum, in reddit, I wrote a ticket to Larian Support, Google CHATGPT (for summarising information and solutions).
I went through the following solutions - fixing the game part 1:

1. Changed framerate cap to 90, then to 60, resolution to 1600 x 900 and full screen mode, to borderless, to windowed (none worked)
2. Added the game in private and public list in the firewall exceptions
3. Disabled overlay programs - NVIDIA, discord, steam, no installed rivatuner nor msi afterturner for overcloking GPU utility
4. Disabled MC Teams from task manager
5. Unchecked windows 11's game notifications from System -> Notifications
6. Steam disabled for big picture mode, only standard mode
7. Updated windows and NVIDIA drivers
8. https://sdk.lunarg.com/sdk/download/1.4.328.1/windows/VulkanRT-X64-1.4.328.1-Installer.exe - VULKAN RUNTIME INSTALLER INSTALLED with 0 failed files
9. NET core - particularly repaired Microsoft windows desktop runtime entry v6.0 (successful)
10. System files from CMD - sfc /scannow for integrity of files did not find any vilations
13. testing my RAM for problems using the built in windows memory diagnostic program - no issues found
14. No GSYNC in nvidia control panel
15. Regeditor adjustment - created 32 bits TDRLEVEL and set it to hexdecimal 0 (this actually was the last thing i did and it fixed my game for a while)

It was doing fine for couple of weeks, no issues at all, running as an administration via bg3.exe or bg3_dx11.exe, until another nvidia update driver came on 26th of May and the game started to completely freeze during cutscenes, character customization and levelling up customization.

Fixing the game part 2:

Vsync on double buffering - turned ON
resolution 1600 x 900
running the game through dx_11.exe

Changes I made after this as of 04.06.2026:

1. Removed --skip-launcher in steam launch options
2. Repatching the game by deleting the whole larian studios folder from the locappdata folder (took a while. stayed up to late midnight)
3. Added skip launcher again in steam launch options
4. tdr level from 0 to 10 (seconds) and restarted laptop because of regeditor changes to apply
5. Went to system - display - graphics, disabled hardware accelerated GPU scheduling HAGS (restarted too)
6. Nvidia control panel - 3d settings, power management mode changed from normal mode to preferred maximum performance mode
7. bg_dx11.exe (for dx 11 on this laptop with this GPU, vulkan is not recommended - as it doesn't seem compatible for my NVIDIA GPU driver model) -> propertities -> compability -> turned on run as admin and turned on disable full screen optimizations
8. Added -dx11- --skip-launcher in steam (since it was on vulkan automatically)

Game lags like shit during character customization after I applied the last changes above
Reverted the HAGS back to normal and enabled the launcher so I'd lock it on DIRECTX11
--skip-launcher added again

DXGI error is back from the first time issue is BACK!

Part 3 - looking for similar solutions like last time:

1. regeditor - tdr to be reverted back to 0 (deleted and created new tdr level with hexdecimal 0, restarted laptop for applied changes)
2. nvidia control panels - antialiasing fxaa to be turned off from 3d settings (already was turned off)
3. uninstalled nvidia rtx from device manager and rebooted laptop to have it automatically installed upon restart

Now, I was persuaded to install mods right at the very beginning of the game (before any crashes and gameplays happened), as I did but turns out I couldn't play with the party due to incompability between the party members' mods. Since mods also reflect on the game:

4.eleted the modsettings.lsx file from the localappadata larian studios folder, then deleted the Mods folder from the bin folder of BG3 folder (the latter was empty)
5.deleted levelcache folder from localappadata larian studios folder

I ran the game again and it crashed with the DXGI error...

Also, my laptop from time to time crashes with the screen - "Your device ran into a problem and we are trying to fix it.."

According to AIs, my specs should be fine for the game, as the problem is not hardware-related, but more like GPU-related...

I really have no idea what to do from now on, I have tried everything I could look for, I also verified the integrity of files at least 10 times, reinstalled the game 2 times as well...

I am thinking to give up on gaming overall and sell my laptop at this point.. I want to play a story-rich, fantasy open-world game with friends, just like Baldur's Gate 3 and basically replace some old toxic games.. but I just see this as a mission impossible...

My last resort, as larian support couldn't even help me, is to reach out people here and kindly ask for an advice. I really don't know what to do and if I can't fix it, I will just stop playing any games, if I can't just enjoy this game..

Any help would be much appreciated!

I am willing to even pay, do something, anything!

Thank you.

EDIT: I have 30 GB of DISK C (out of 190), Disk D is around 100 GB (after BG3 has been installed), up to date windows 11 and up to date NVIDIA GPU
