Hi,
I'm interested in opinions about what games to look for after finishing BD. I have played all the Diablo, Starcraft and Dune games. I've gone through Neverwinter Nights, The Dungeon Sieges, Icewind Dale I&ll. The Baulder Gate series and Medieval Times Battle Collection. I've also played older games.
Part of the problem I have is that older games do not play on my system. Compaq Presario P4. Windows XP, 1.00GB of Ram,2.53GHz. 512MB. Of course there is Compatiblilty Wizard but it doesn't always work out well.
I appreciate any suggestions that I am given.
Thank you,
Ferettmom

Yes, Knights of the Old Republic is a great RPG. Not to mention that it should be rather cheap now.

Knights of the Old Republic is, hands down, the best RPG I've played since BG2. Wonderful, wonderful characters and story. Pretty graphics, great writing, excellent voiceacting, amazing storytelling. Polish that makes the product actually professional.
Try to get your hands on Planescape: Torment, if you aren't afraid of colossal amounts of text.

Planescape: Torment, if you did find it, might not work on your newer machine as you said you have some compatibility probs, but then maybe someone here has it and it runs on a new machine.
Ever seen Morrowind 3? Now there's a game you can get lost in, but I'm not sure if that's your taste. First Person view and huge open ended game.
I really enjoyed Temple of Elemental Evil, after it's patched I had no problems with it and it was for me the best turn based combat system I've played.

I'm actually enjoying Neverwinter Nights immensely at the moment. Despite the bad things I've heard about it. Get the expansion packs though. Creating epic characters is fantastic!

I think he means that KotOR is relatively linear and somewhat "light" compared to the more "hardcore" RPGs like, uh... I don't know. Baldur's Gate 2? But compared to most recent RPGs, IMO, KotOR is positively un-lite. (Yes, that includes BD. BD doesn't even have different choices for male and female characters, and dialogue options are limited as heck.) ToEE is a tactical game with obligatory RPG clothing. No more, no less.

I know what he meant by "RPG-lite" but I don't see why it is linear: you have many optinal side-quests, two ways to finish the game, party to customise (as well as weapons and armours), the land is pretty big, the combat is tactical too... I don't see why to consider BG2 more hardcore than KotOR (even if I like BG2 as much as I like KotOR): there are not many locations in BG2, when you think of it. The map in-between is blank. You might encounter random monsters but that's all. Not to mention, the maps are not too big. If you get beyond the border, the travel icon appears. No, as I said, I don't see a reason why KotOR is "RPG-lite". If you mean that Diablo is "hardcore" then I prefer playing "lite".

I'll get KotOR and NWN soon, when I can spare it. But NWN 2 is coming out soon, or they're working on it more and more.

It's just that some people think KotOR is "dumbed down" (such as the simplified d20 rules, the areas are relatively small, the game is considered "too short" compared to Bioware's/Black Isle's other babies). 'Course, I'm not one of the people who think that an overabundance of stuff makes for substance. (The utterly insane damage/resistance types and filler stuff in BD, for one, don't make the game any "deeper" for me. They're just there to aggravate, and I'd rather like something nice, polished and clean like in KotOR.)

They're just there to aggravate, and I'd rather like something nice, polished and clean like in KotOR.) Ah, so I suspected the d20 system was simplified. But that doesn't make the game less polished or interesting. I don't know: I wouldn't call it short because I only found 4 pieces of Star Map after playing 35+ hours (okay, I admit, I won 24 rounds of Pazaak with 600cred. bets). Sure, I now restarted as an evil character and accidently overwrote the aforementioned 35+ hour savegame and it took me 4 hours to get to Dantooine (and almost finish it too [once again, I forgot to save and have to clean two maps because of it]). Still I am eager to see KotOR 2. One of my eFriends, who also picked up KotOR after I told him about it (and finished it way before me) preordered Sith Lords, but I think I want to see the game first. I am worried that Obsidian would wrong something. Then again, Obsidian made Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 1 and 2 and helped Bioware with the Bladur's Gate games... I know Bioware assists Obsidian with KotOR 2, but I have no idea what kind of assistance it is. Let's all cross our fingers and hope for the best. As for me, after watching two hours of Futurama, I shall go advance in KotOR: the sooner I am done, the sooner I can read winterfox's fanfic.

Darkstone is an older RPG game that I liked so much that I still have it.
Halflife and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are both very good
While a not a RPG I think the Thief and Tomb Raider series are great. All except the latest Tomb Raider, Angel of Darkness.
Zanzarah will have you capturing and training faries,
I was disapointed with Halo and Knights of The Old Republic as I found them to be mostly hack & slash without much content.

hey u KOTOR heads & whatever else!
i don't mean to sound condescending when i referred KOTOR as RPG-lite. it feels lite! i mean linear (i do have that feeling, death ol' boy), character builds though solid are just so so so limited. in the end u will require certain set of skills just to beat the end-game boss. that's the boring-est fight, if there is such a word.
yet another lite would be space. game area though it gives u that feeling of BIG, i realised that it's way way way small. as if i'm pushed to certain direction to move on with the story. side quests are interesting, though not enough. yeah, i'm a sucker to side quests.
other than that little nags, KOTOR is easily one of the best games. though i still wish i can beat 'jabber jaw' with pistols. *sigh* at least i can still use grenades to kill that dude.

No, actually, there's a number of Force powers that can be used for that fight: throw lightsaber, destroy droid, drain life, Force lightning. Bioware probably assumed that every player will at least pick up one of those. After BD, almost anything looks wonderful, really. KotOR would look absolutely divine.

destroy droids?! what the heck? who's the droid here? do enlighten this fool. throw lightsaber is quite pointless in that fight as he can easily deflect. if he ups his force defense (sorry, forgot the name of the skill), drain life & force lightning does insignificant damage.
so far grenades have been my best friend.
