Can anyone tell me how to beat Fergus at the beginning of the game??? Thank you for any help

I'm afraid your best bet is to get a sharp object and try poking him several times.

Or try searching on the forum, there was a post somewhere.

Try to get all the health potions, spells, armor, and best weapons you can before fighting him. I always whenever one person is almost dead have them run around the room while the other attacks, and eventually he switches attacking to a new person. Or try someone with a bow with someone with a sword.

It also helps, in the one or 2 level up's (can't remember exactly how many) to put all your points into constitution.

I had the same problem, tried & tried, read all the suggestions.
Was ready to give up.
Finally went here although I did have to start my game from the beginning again.

My main-problem was the AI when I was using spells with my hero. Using spells simply doesn't seem to count as an attack. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> And thus my DK often would stand there doing nothing. You have to poke him with a weapon at least once (use a bow if you don't want to get too close) and then you can use your spells.

i snook, sneaked... Creapt up to him until it started that cinematic then shot him to death with fireballs, and if he got close i moved away, didnt get hit once.
